A Couple of Monty Issues

Monty is his usual cheerful bubbly self but he has a couple of things going on at the same time.

One is I found a lump on the back of his leg a couple of weeks ago under a mat. It went down in size, got a scab on it. Then he started licking it and I noticed puss so I took him to the vet, he shaved the area and cleaned it up. Said it is most likely from a blocked hair folicule. He didnt suggest testing it for cancer. I have a cone on him now so he can't lick it. I opted out of the antibiotics as it doesn't look to bad, but will get him it if the puss doesn't stop. The lump has a rubbery red surface and small about 1/4 inch. Has anyone else had his?

The other thing is that he has been been vomiting after drinking a lot of water, yesterday and today. I forgot to ask the vet about it. He is showing no ill effects, he is happy, eating well. It is mostly water and remnants of dinner. It is worrying me a bit.

Hi there, I don't post very often, but come on the board periodically. My sheepdog just had this a couple of weeks ago. Part the hair and pour hydrogen peroxide over the affected area (I did this with a towel underneath the soar to catch the excess)---this will help the puss come out. I did this three times a day, and after each time, I would let it air dry dor about 10 minutes and then apply neosporin on it. I also put vaseline on the tip of the hair surrounding the soar to kind of paste down the hair around it so that the area could get air. Hope this makes sense. It went down in three days and I never had to give him an antibiotic. Good Luck!!! Carrie
Please don't use hydrogen peroxide full strength - it damages tissue. It's a good cleaning agent, but is best diluted. A 50/50 mix with water is good. It doesn't have to be precise - you can eyeball it by making the total volume be half and half of each. Old timers said use peroxide, but in fact it causes tissue damage at full strength. I am an RN, worked in trauma for 20 years. Cleaning wounds we use the 50% mixture. It still cleans, without damaging the already bad tissue issues even further.
Dogs can easily regurgitate their water if they drink too fast, too much, or too soon after exercise. It's like a safety switch in the body - and sends the water right back up. If there is food in the mix, the food bits will come up too. Some dogs are really sensitive to this, and it triggers easily - some it never happens. Just depends on the dog.
You will learn by watching him, and can modify the timing or amount of water he drinks to avoid this happening. It never seems to bother the dogs - as it fixes the problem. It only bugs us, so if you want to avoid it, you will have to monitor it. The dogs never seem to change the behavior themselves....to them it's a non-issue ;)
The red lump and puss is indeed the hair follicle. Applying warm compresses may help but it really is a nonissue. In time the body will heal itself....I've gotten these myself and they can be painful! The more you mess with them, often the more painful they become. Let nature take it's course, healthy bodies heal. If your dog was getting these frequently, then yeah, there might be a physical problem why they are popping up.

Ditto hydrogen peroxide, never full strength.

As for water vomiting, slowing their drinking down might help. There are those bowls with a partial opening on the top..........but really those are for the "pearl divers" those that like to wash their nose while they drink. Limiting how much water is in the bowl at one time is probably all you can do, other than the bottles with the tube attached so the dog has to lick the tube for moisture....fine for bunnies and hamsters, but seem cruel for a large dog.

Yeah dogs vomit frequently.....I wait to see if they will clean their mess up on their own 8O ....or walk away.
Thanks for everyone's advice. The vet gave me some soap scrub so I have been using that. Being our first dogs and first lump it was worrying so I wanted to make sure I wasn't alone in this type of lump.

It was very hot the last two days and Monty drank a lot of water fast after exercise so we think this was what was causing him to regurgitate the water. It was rather messy and thank goodness we have hardwood and not carpet.

After the occurrence of his lump because of the matting on the back of the leg, I ordered the grooming table even though my husband said we didn't need it (it has to stay in the spare from as he doesn't want it as part of the living room furniture). Monty really hates the back of his legs and bum being groomed so it was hard on the mat as he would constantly roll over or sit on them so impossible to get deep into the fur to the skin.

The grooming table arrived today and I used it tonight. It was easier as I could attach him to the arm so he couldn't lie down and I did a much better job at getting to the awkward places. There was some peeping going on.

Can they ever go from hating their back legs from being groomed to enjoying it?
Thanks for the info, didn't know you should dilute the peroxide!
