Anyone else have the same problem? I feel incredibly guilty for leaving him alone during the displays around us. |

Poor Pooh. We didn't shoot any really loud fireworks (kids are too young), but we mostly did the one that pop, shoot up, & do the dazzling stars and colorful bursts.
Jasper barked & barked & barked...lol When one when into the sky though, he just perked his ears up and looked up at it. I think he had a mixed review of them! |
awww poor Pooh!
Pepsi was next to us and watched the small ones, but when we started with the louder, whistling, and booming ones he kept running back into the house. Then he'd come back to see if everything was ok. I think it must be scarier when they can't see what's going on and just hear the noises. Elissa |
I wanted to bring him with us, because I figured he'd have us to keep him safe. Oh well, hopefully next year they'll have them at the dog friendly park again like last year. |
Poor pooh!! |
I had Panda in the backyard and I went to bed at 9:30 She started barking and barking...she finally quieted down...this morning I found 2 bottle rockets in the backyard....she was probably scared out of her mind...darn neighbor kids...what can I say ...another bad mommy moment...next year she'll be inside with me!!! |
My parents' sheepie Maggie HATES fireworks. She is so scared of everything that this is no great surprise. She shakes and whimpers and us petting her and trying to comfort her doesn't help at all. We try and show them to her and she wants nothing to do with it. She's 7 years old so she has heard them many times (plus, my parents live in a place where there are fireworks almost nightly, either from the outdoor Pops or from Padres games) and she is still terrified.
Never scared the poop out of her yet, though! Barney, by the way, couldn't care less about fireworks! |
Truman is scared of fireworks too. In fact, we've had a hard time getting him to go outside (in the back yard) ever since July 4th. He has peed in the house twice and pooped once since then. I think it's because he doesn't want to go out. We still hear occasional firecrackers which are the worst for him. However, if I put him on a leash and take him outside to the front yard, he will go pee if he needs to. I'm not sure what to do about his fear of fireworks, esp. firecrackers. One pee and one poop were on an antique bed with an antique quilt which I've had to wash twice. I've heard that's not good to put them in the washer, but what else could I do?! Any suggestions about how to get him back on track with the housetraining? |
Sorry for the late reply, just catching up on all the posts while I was away.
Drez hates fireworks, too, and thunder, and gunshots (we live in the country). She gets this terrified look in her eyes and starts shaking. During a thunderstorm, she glues herself to you and hides her head. Poor baby! Wish I knew what it was about the loud sounds that scares her so. Chris |
I really can't offer any advice as Blue has always been afraid of thunder and fireworks..where he crawls underneath my legs if I'm sitting in a chair. Panda on the other hand becomes very stressed...races around the yard, vomits..barks...vomits.... I stayed home ,Halloween because of his behavior and also Canada Day which we celebrate on July 1st. It was better this time around perhaps because while I didn't coddle him to much, I kept talking to him in a quiet voice and reassuring him. Halloween I didn't answer my door which is a big deal for me but stood in the dark back yard with Panda for a while. That seemed to work a bit as he eventually settled down but still barks but no longer vomits when he hears them.
I think dogs become so stressed around the sounds, especially the firecrackers..due to the whisling sound. Remember our guys have way better hearing than us and are sensitive to those high pitched ones..sorta like dog whistles, but these sounds must be very frightening to them. It might be their nature too, as many animals hear things humans don't prior to an event. For example all those elephants that stampeded and headed for the hills before the Tsunami hit. Maybe giving our guys a bit of some kind of calming solution before the event..forget the name of it at the moment. Perhaps someone can refresh my memory? Merlin, whom I had since 8 wks and have always exposed him to crowds and loud noises..didn't react at all. Maybe that's the key..not for those of us that have dogs whom have already this fear but for those that have new pups. Exposing them to as many things as possible when they are still very young.
