There's a mentally deficient person who is often in the park. He talks to me. It took him a while (i.e., months) to warm up to Mats. Tonight, he petted and rumpled Mats and told his (somewhat higher functioning) companion that Mats was a good, friendly dog.
At our local strip mall, there was a mom and 2 upper grade school girls. They were initially a bit reserved about Mats -- he does look like a bear. After an introduction and my speil about Mats being very friendly and gentle, everyone met Mats and gave him skritches. One of the girls immediately bonded with Mats and they had a great long cuddle. Mom said the girl had autism and didn't interact with people but that she liked animals. Mats certainly liked her.
There was a birthday party with an extended family and many children. After the first kid asked if she could pet Mats, he was mobbed. A toddler only slightly taller than Mats' back stood beside him and rumpled the coat on this back. Two others played with his ears. One and then several of them lifted Mats' fall to see his blue eye and brown eye. Parents watched and thanked me for sharing Mats with them. |

Mats is a natural. What a good boy. I know that you are so proud to be on the other end of the leash. |
What a sweet evening you had with your boy. I'm sure he was thrilled to have all the attention. |
