The Blue Ridge vet group was the focus. Being in health care, I was embarrassed to not have even considered the where/how/what of a trauma dog needing a transfusion. Does this happen often, is the need tremendous? The Blue Ridge website is http://www.blueridgevets.com/site/view/ ... odBank.pml Thoughts? |

It's been around a long time. Way back when I was in college, fresh out of HS many decades ago, the college I attended had a really good vet tech program. The college was one of the smaller branches of the University of MN, and a separate campus from St Paul where they have the vet school. I had several roommates in the vet tech program (8 of us girls in a big Victorian house). They had donated dogs that were called the "kennel dogs" and one of their jobs was to act as blood donors. They had a specific time frame they did this (so many months) and then they were adopted out. They lived a pretty good life - better than in shelters or on the streets for sure - which is where many came from. We all took turns bringing them home for the weekend (the non-dorm students), and they were walked and played with constantly. All of those students missing their own dogs at home! They could come in the dorms during the day, but needed to go back at night. People who adopted these dogs got really well trained and well socialized dogs! |
When I was a vet tech, we all made our dogs available as donor dogs. We weren't an emergency vet, so we didn't have a lot of need, but it was great to have that available when we did. |
