Frontline or Advantix

Bailee has been on Frontline for almost 5 years now. We started him out as a puppy and Frontline was always an excellent treatment to deter and/or kill any fleas or ticks. that is until this year. I have applied his normal dosage since Spring and have noticed 2 things. Frontline always left a yellow/greenish stain on his neck area where I applied the dose, UNTIL about 3 months ago. I noticed it but felt that the manufacturer may have "improved" their product. Then we noticed NUMEROUS fleas all over poor Bailee. Since the applications cannot be made too close in time to each other I gave him baths using fles shampoo which killed off the nasty pests quickly, only to notice more within a few days. Called the Vet and he told me I had to wait at least three weeks before I switched to Advantix in an effort to give Bailee some relief. In the meantime we powdered the sleeping area and rugs where he usually lays. Still had fleas! Finally after the 3 weeks were up I applied a dose of Advantix and now 3 days later I have not found a live flea on him. Looks like Advantix did the job BUT I guess I will never figure out why, after 4+ years Frontline failed to do anything. Oh well, all that matters is Bailee seems A LOT happier!

Frontline is now available over the counter now. I wonder if they changed the formulation.
But I've heard and read stories over the last 2 years saying Frontline isn't as effective anymore.

I still use Frontline but supplant it with the oral flea med, Comfortis.

I think I tried Advantix on Brick back in the summer of '07. The skin along his spine got real sensitive and if you touched him there, he wold drop his back quite a bit.
Frontline never did that to him.
It's called mutation - the fleas are now resistant to the drug. That's how evolution works ;)
That's the same reason you shouldn't overuse, or misuse antibiotics - the "bugs" become drug resistant.
We can get the "old" Frontline fairly cheaply at out local doctors/pharmacy. The "new" Frontline combi cost twice the amount and can only get at the vet. The difference is that "combi" kills the larvea (spelt wrong I expect). Have been told to use Frontline in summer as good on ticks and Advoate as it called here in winter for fox mange.x
Weve always used front line however since the vets changed they give us advocate. Does a lot more than front line so its worth expenses
Charm could not tolerate the Advantix, like Brick, she itched and was horribly sensitive. Frontline is still working fine for her, the vet formula. It does stain, but luckily, she has a black patch at just the right place
We always used Advantrix and never a problem in seven years. Hope I didn't just jink myself :crossed:
We use revolution. Not only does it kill flea and ticks, it is a monthly heart worm prevenative.
Our Advocate does mites-ear etc, worms except one-think round worm so guess is best to get that. X
At Luke's last appointment about 3 weeks ago, he got his rabies vaccination. In addition, a heartgard and frontline dosage was given. I had explained that the last frontline app did not seem to last as long as it had on past dogs. In fact he had been itching somewhat regularly and we were finding live adult fleas on him. They said some dogs need it every 3 weeks rather than monthly. We are about 3 weeks in and he has been itching more frequently. While brushing him I found several live fleas. Argh! Doing a bit of research, there appears to be concerns about adverse reactions in herding breeds with the active ingredient in Frontline. No hotspots...but a couple scab sites on his legs/elbows.

So the question is what are my options? We do have ticks in our area. Will advantix be a better otion
Advantix made Chowder itchy and a bit crazy. Literally crazy. She started hiding from us in the house in places she doesn't normally go. It was weird. We washed it off with Dawn soap within a few hours.
Two years ago we changed vets. Our old vet preferred K9 Advantix and we never had a flea, however our new vet likes Frontline. A few months after changing meds we found fleas. Needless to say we treated the house ( not fun ), de-flea Chauncey ( even less fun ) and changed back to Advantix. This year we a flea free..... :wag:
