Help! My OES Has Creative Ladscaping Issues!

My OES, Daffy has recently started a creative landsaping campaign in my yard. She has started digging up my yard on a regular basis, if she contiues my yard will eventually become one big trench. The digging seems to be in response to some sort of smell in the ground because she often intensely sniffs an area prior to digging. I have rulled out bordom as a factor in her behavior, as she digs regardless of if someone is outside playing with her or not. A staff member at our vet's store believes her behavior to be linked with the high population of small white bugs (Grubs) underground this year. Appearently, dogs are highly attracted to these bugs. Is this "bug theory" right? Please let me know of any helpful ideas about the causes & solutions to my OES's creative landscaping issue.

Woof likes to take things he shouldn't (usually from his counter-surfing missions), crisp packets and the like, and bury these in the garden so we can't see them

..and to think I used to believe this kind of thing only happened in cartoons....
If it is grubs, there is a spray you can put down to kill them. Also if you have grubs you may have a mole that he smells. My dog can smell my mole that I have been trying to get rid of for weeks, but he has not dug any holes yet (still a pup). I hope that helps. Shelly
Abbi has alerted me to grubs, toads, cicada, and (what we call)June bugs digging in the ground. Their hearing is VERY keen. she loves eating grups, bu tjust hates the noise the other insects make. Toads have already taught her a lesson I think. She no longer chases them.
All dogs like to dig and act like the greatest hunters on earth.
They love to hide their favorite toys, foods, pills, and even "borrowed" stuff in the ground too.
This is why I do not spray or put granules out in the backyard. If the dog gets sick, the first thing my old vet would ask is, did you put out any pesticides in the yard? I do put out bait as it seems Abbi doesn't care for any of them--so far.
The lazy way to go is a battery operated electric fence. I put it every where I didn't want her to dig. Left it on for a couple of months and now energize whenever she crosses the wires too much. She still digs behind the shed and at the gates. Put gravel at the gates and she can dig as much as she wants behind the shed.
Works for us.
Sounds like you have a better idea with the landscaping though. Just plant rosemary, thyme, and basil. My dog hates those. Dill and lavendar are not her favorites either. She leaves them alone without an electric fence.
Enjoy your bundle of furry joy! When they get sick .... well, you wish you were only worried about them eating your siding or digging up you yard.
You could also try some distracton techniqe, while you put something like pepper on the mounds of freshly dug dirt. Might work.
Have fun figuring it out!
