I dont want to cut her hair but our humidity over the past few weeks has kept her inside 90% of the time and the mats are really getting to the point of no control. She hates being brushed and without a grooming table and the proper restraints I am fighting a loosing battle. For her own comfort I need to ensure that she is able to enjoy the outdoors, swimming and running around. Is an inch of hair enough to keep her from sunburn? She is not a dog that is kept outside but she sure loves to join us around the pool but generally speaking I take her inside every hour or so too cool down. Any thoughts? |

Hiya!
If she is getting matted badly you may not be able to leave an inch... the groomer would have to remove all the matts first before clipping her, which is a lot of work and no fun for Maggie. If she is shaved right down there will be about 1/4 of an inch of coat, so you will have to watch she isn't in the sun much, or if she is put a little sunscreen on her. How are you and Maggie doing otherwise? Haven't chatted with you in a while! |
Hi there
maggie only has about 5 knots or so and I am able to get them out a little at a time but it seems as soon as I get one out another one appears - she is outside enough that I cant fight the humidity - are Sky and Dancer clipped right down? I really do not want to touch her coat but part of me feels that it is not fair to her to limit her outdoor play due to knots and heat. Otherwise, we are doing great but it has been a very busy few months. Will try to catch you online so we can chat! |
unless you have a 1" blade, which I don't think even exists, you probably won't be able to get her to 1"... I use a 3/8" blade. I shave roo once a year (unless he gets too matty like when his puppy hair fell out), and let him regrow in the fall and winter. I bought the OES for a reason, after all. I tried using a clip-on comb last time... after five minutes i threw the stupid thing away. It's insane. I had a shih-tzu for 17 years and did all his grooming, and constantly used the snap-on combs. Roo is a whole other animal! good lord, I can only imagine how many HOURS that would take. I can get roo completely done in about 90 minutes if I give his face a schnauzer cut..
Roofus LOVES to get dirty (but he loves baths, go figure), and he also loves to swim and do things outside so I shave him for that reason. I don't have to use sunscreen on him, he's fine. He usually seeks out the shade anyway, or he splashes in his pool. |
Roo is a lucky dog - I keep having to remind myself that I bought a family pet not a show piece and she needs to be able to swim, run and play with the rest of us comfortably and if she cant then she will miss out and that is not what having her is all about. A haircut is a haircut and if it will make her a little more bouncy then off we go........tomorrow morning at 10:00!
Wish us luck! I am anxious to see her and just hope she likes it! We are expecting more humid temps in the next few days so I will post and let you know if I find a big difference. |
Good Luck to Roo.... I want to see pictures |
I bought the Chris Christensen product Ice on Ice. It is a leave in detangler and finishing spray that contains sunscreen. Not sure about the %. The detangling part is fine, I don't use it for the sunscreen....when we start taking Sam to the beach more often, I will use what I use on my 8 year old son. I had cocker spaniels before Sam and always kept them clipped and when we took them on the boat, I would coat them with sunscreen. |
