Lady looking for a OESD in the USA with a tail (puppy). Asks people if anyone knew a breeder and could they passs on the breeders info. OMG there were a few people who were on one & started banging on its not the breed standard and so on. All the lady wanted a puppy for a pet and not for showing or breeding. How can people be so ? |

Indeed people are very cruel. I hope you referred her to the OESCA breeder referral service. |
That is so sad, I hope she gets some positive responses and finds her puppy. |
Discussions get quite heated....and not always in a good way. My good friend, and neighbor Donna has TFT's (Toy Fox Terriers)...and they are good ones, REALLY good ones..... Top ranked in the nation, all her own breeding and handling. Her young male is #3 TFT in the USA currently, and that's just with her showing him, and she also is married, works full time too. (Doesn't show every weekend like some do to keep ranking up). So - to set the stage...she gets a request from a person who has TFT's and who has the top ranked agility TFT in the country, and wants one of her puppies. BUT - she has been doing research... and for balance, etc for a performance dog, she wants to have Donna leave the TAIL on her puppy. She never has tried a TFT with a tail, and she decided with this puppy she wanted his tail left on. So, seeing they do tails right after birth (current trend, as the nervous system is even less mature right at birth, vs even a day or 5 afterwards), she took pics, assessed as best she could, and they agreed which pup would be hers, and left his tail. Then Donna started documenting the litter with pics...and boy did the responses about this puppy with a tail come flying!!! But, seeing 2 of the most credible TFT people in their respective areas were doing this, it actually settled down. And as Donna kept taking photos and posting them, he got quite a LARGE following and fan club. His name is Spyder...and he is developing into a most awesome little guy. I'm thrilled that they live in the Milwaukee area, and I will get to see him at the occasional trial we both attend. Her current TFT is Blink (as in if you blink you'll miss him!), and he is a great little agility dog. Young Spyder will be her next competition dog! |
This is exactly why I don't make a big deal about Benson's tail. |
Tail or no tail, a sheepie is still a sheepie. Sometimes I wish Lily didn't have a tail because it means extra grooming and stuff gets knocked off tables. (Their tails wiggle just as much as their bums, the bum wiggle may contribute to extra tail wagging too) Her tail is beautiful, fluffy and she wouldn't be Lily without it. |
And really, in the grand scheme of everything, it's really a stupid argument. It's like 2 people arguing about their favorite color: "blue is the best color! No, red is!" For me, it's like, who really cares? The dog is still the same dog, whether he has a tail or not. Getting worked up about such a trivial matter is pointless. |
Unfortunately that is the way it is with countries that can still dock, there up in arms if god forbid anyone wants a tail on a tradionally docked breed. I copped a lot of flack too, co-bred a litter with my co-breeder in NZ, they were born in Australia, no docking allowed, sent an OES back to NZ, first time in the showring a tailed OES . Did not matter but he did cause a stir, got his Ch, Title fast, they showed him under O/S judges not locals and romped it in with the thing hanging off his butt. Now NZ is going through again the docking drama. I think like us here they will eventually loose the battle like most of the world has. OES with or without a tail are still OES. Shame in countries where they can still dock, if someone requests as a Companion Dog (I do hate the word Pet) such angst is made towards them. Now lets talk tails, in agility and performance dogs, they have been attributed too a rudder the tail, helping in that side of things, helping the dog turn faster/sharper, have more of an accute balance, etc etc. I can say that too, one docked and 2 with tails here. Two with tails, turns are sharper and balance better. My boy in NZ, first shown with a tail and first a NZ Ch with a tail, he caused an enormous stir when shown. Spot the tail? Does not make him any less an OES?????????????????? with or without a tail !!!!! I feel so sorry for that person on FB. |
Our first OES, in 1976, had a tail and could clear a coffee table in one hello! We love the breed, tail or no tail. I can see the US standard changing in the future though not easily or quickly. |
Sprocket is our 4th oes and the 1st with a tail. The only "problem" is that he leaves it "laying around" as dad human says so can get nearly trodden on. He also likes to put it into any water he can then whack you with this long, wet thing!!xx |
