So treated for that this a.m. Doc wanted to use Ivermectin until I told her Kensey hasn't had her MDR-1 test for the gene problem and Ivermectin. So vet said we could use her professional discount instead of doing it ourselves at 2x the price. Now we begin the 3 weeks of Antibiotics to kill Wolbachia bacteria which lives in association with and defends heartworms from chemical attack. Usual biotic is doxycycline which has sky rocketed to it would cost us between $500 and $750 just for that. So using something else, hope it works. Then the first "shot", wait 4 weeks, second and third. All the time she must remain quiet. Good thing she is by nature. |

FWIW, doxy was recently totally unavailable...so having some now after this period of unavailability likely accounts for the high price. I hadn't been aware of it, but I had a friend who needed it for her dog and it flat out wasn't obtainable. And tapeworms...ugh. The Paw just went through a tapeworm issue. A group of dogs that were being boarded came in w/ them...and the poor girls who work there as daycare workers and evening letouts were so grossed out. They had to disinfect all the outdoor turf areas (thank goodness for the installed sprinkler system, that has the capability of adding in products to be sprayed on then turf...I think it was the 1st time they ever used this feature!) They also had to send home letters to all the dog parents.... It reminded me of the head lice letters in elementary school |
Kensey is lucky to have you taking care of her. |
Poor little girl--she must feel so lucky to have found you. Hope it all goes well and all the 'worms' are taken care of! |
Goodness, doesn't sound like a good week for either of you Hope you feel better soon. Kensey, you are such a sweetie now, cannot imagine how wonderful you will be when 100% |

Just thinking - with Kensey having HW, and tapeworms....you may be surprised what a spunky girl you have when she recovers!! Riley got way more spunk...it was interesting looking back at how "calm" of a dog he was before treatment. He didn't appear sick at all. We just thought at age 5 he was mellowing. He never had been a hyper rat terrier anyway. But now at age 7 he has WAY more bounce and enthusiasm for life |

Maybe Kensey really is a vibrant, healthy 5 year old just waiting to get out! I know you will take good care of her! |

Come fall, cooler temps, healthy dog.......... Went out for lunch (love my squash enchilada with red chile!!) , came home and she was not in garage hiding. She was down by the spruce which is half way down the yard. She still not sure of her name, but looked up eventually......or she's partially deaf.........came to the front gate as DH unlocked it, he gave a sharp NO and she ran for the front door, well away from the gate Each dog has had to learn not to dash out open gates. She let me soft brush her, but ears were not pleasant. I'd suspect ear infections are gone now, just some tangles on those spaniel ears. Also let me to a little grinding on the front nails and gently scrape two teeth. Little by little. Stool sample came back for no parasites but did have some grain mites........she found the bird seed trays or the fallen hulls. No problem. Think I'll put her on DE for awhile to control intestinal UFOs until we see if she has the gene mutation for Ivermectin. Took her tape worm medicine yesterday so those should be on the run. |
