Not sure if these have been posted before...

but here are two pretty well written pieces about dogs. Specifically their breeding and pricing.

I'm not trying to stir an already well mixed pot, just sharing what I stumble across yesterday. I read through these and thought I could use some of it to aid my conversations to help educate those who need it and are willing to listen. Such a situation came up last time we were at our local outdoor mall. A woman was politely grilling me about our girls. In the end, I'd given her the oes.org site, my number and a couple other contacts. She was wanting to rescue and currently owns two older Bernies. She's wanting a Sheepie next...

Loved these! Clearly communicated without being combative.
I must admit though, I am a comment reader. I don't think it's just me,
but some of the commenting people didn't get it. Some were clearly just
being nasty because they thought they had earned it in some way. But the
majority were really in line with what she was saying. I think that is
great progress. We would not have seen this 10 years ago. Good for her!

If they have been posted before, I have not seen them. Those were both good articles and particular that first one.

Of course, you can never convince a cheapskate, why a car with a fancy label or anything else that can be bought at a lower price is better. All they see is dollar signs and they will fight to the death justifying it.

But for those people who are new to buying a dog and they are not making a decision soley based on money this article is a keeper.

I plan to give it to people who are in the market for a dog and need a place to start when they want a particular breed.

Thanks for posting these.
Well people think if you buy a dog cheap its the best thing.
1. Not cheap due to high vet bills
2. Pup has issues with eveyone
3. Had enough of said dog i better take it to a rescue
4. or I could chain it up in the garden & just feed it scraps
Very good articles. I stumbled across these a few weeks ago too. I have lost count of how many times I have told prospective puppy people the same things. My most often asked question is "how come your pups are $1500.00 when I can get one down in Amish country (about 45 minutes from my house) for $400.00?" My puppies are now 6 months old. I told myself that at 12 weeks (the age I would have let them go to new homes) that I would sit down & calculate the cost I put into this litter (minus the showing of the parents as that is my hobby), just to prove to myself that good breeders really don't make money on a litter. I have all the receipts from all the different vets I needed to use from reproduction testing to tail dockings to routine shots to post partum care for the dam etc. etc. etc., puppy food....you name it. So far I haven't bothered to do so. 1st of all I am way too busy trying to keep up with everything around here & would rather use the time spent on that to take a nap since I've rarely had more than 4-5 hours of sleep at one time since December 15th. 2nd, I've already decided these 2 little guys are worth way more than any amount of money I spent. Someday, maybe when I can retire, I'll drag out the folder with all the receipts :lmt:

I'd be too dam scared to add all that up  8)

It's frightening 8O
Forget the breeding, I'm afraid to figure out how much I've spent on grooming stuff  I have 4 dog dryers and not a single one for me, I have to use theirs

   I've got a crappy $30 dryer for us and my dog dryer was well over $1000

   Mine is also Mason Pearson brushes, they cost a bombshell for the dogs and I use them too on occassions instead of my 5 buck elcheapo one for my hair!!!.

Yeah I'd hate to add up all the lotions, potions, tables, dryers etc and grooming stuff too. 8O
My tack box is worth a fortune. I don't even want to know how much is in there $$$$$wise. The only thing that sticks out tho' is the hairspray. I pay $2.99 a can for what I use on my hair. I pay $17.00 for the can that travels in my tackbox 8O
The hairspray comment made me laugh.

I had a can in my tack box. Showing Bond at our specialty last month, I was NOT happy with how it performed. His headcoat is so thick, and kept tipping into his eyes. The stuff Ann used worked great!

....so - I went and bought what she had...and the "reject" spray got moved from the tackbox, to my supply in the bathroom closet! Not good enough for the dogs, but good enough for me!! ;)

I had a hair appt last week, and Kim my stylist loves my dog show and hair stories. She was asking how I was doing for product...and I had to tell her about the hairspray....:D :D
