You probably have 2 things going on; you pulled some undercoat loose that wasn't combed out (you will never get it all combed out) and your dog is in coat transition, mats develop in minutes! It may be easier to clip or have him clipped to get rid of the mats and get through transition. You may not need to take him all the way down but a trim to an inch or 2 will make life easier. It's amazing how fast their coat grows back. |
I agree. Also - by working at those mats without a good grooming spray, you may have done a lot of damage to the coat. You likely have frayed and broken ends and uneven pieces (like our split ends, etc), and that makes a rough coat that is more likely to tangle and mat. That creates a circle of never ending mess and frustration. The best bet would be a short trim or even shaving your pup. Sometimes it's just better to start over with nice fresh hair. Especially the age of your pup, it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, even if you had a coat in pristine condition to work with. |
Also, after a thorough line brushing, running a comb through the legs, head, chest and belly (greyhound comb), a bath and thoroughly blow drying him is a good idea as a clean coat doesn't mat up as easily and is easier to brush the following week or whatever your routine is. |
Thank you, as much as I hate to trim his fluffy I think I might have to. i have a metal comb, not sure what type but I never use it cause it catches in the hair and I cannot get one stroke, but maybe its just my comb? The areas i dematted were large area pretty much his whole sides and face and legs. Some Matt's took me hours of pulling apart, and yes the undercoat in those areas is frayed and broken. Would a bath only make the undercoat more matted or would it stay the same? Would love to clean him up but don't want ruin him haie even more and have to shave him completely |
You can't bath until he is completely mat free... if you check out my grooming tutorial (link in my signature) there are step by step instructions with photos as well as photos of the appropriate brushes and combs. |
