Bad Boarder!

I a SOOO mad!

Ecco went to board for 5 days, and she came back with wounds on both elbows and the backs of her legs. Also, she had ticks and looks like she might have a small infection in her eye.

I went back to the boarder (which also happens to be a VET CLINIC!!!) and showed them the wounds. They said it was because she is an inside dog and not used to lying on concrete. Of course, the vet said, if I had told them that in advance, they could have provided her with some bedding. ARE YOU FREAKIN' KIDDING ME??!!

Anyway, they gave her some antibiotics, but they didn't clean the wounds out. The hair is matted into them, and I'm not sure if I should try to get it unmatted or leave it be. I am afraid of opening them up and causing her to bleed. I am also afraid that the hair might cause a secondary infection 8O I gave her a bath, because she looked and smelled like he had been lying in filth. I have been using an antiseptic spray on the wounds and I am keeping her indoors and on soft surfaces. Other than that, I am at a loss.

So....Any ideas about the hair?

BTW- I am absolutely NEVER going back to that vet/boarder. In fact, I don't think I'll ever board her again in this Podunk town. All the vets and kennels seem to think a dog's place is outside, even in the 100+ heat of summer.

Poor Ecco! :( I don't have any advice, but I hope she feels better soon! Can't believe the vet didn't care about how animals in their 'care' are treated! :x
Wow I would be furious too! :x Did they not notice the wounds developing?
They said they noticed she wasn't being very active, but they didn't see anything wrong, even when they went and got her from the kennel. I can't believe they didn't notice anything, though. The wounds on the backs of her legs are so bad she can't even sit properly.
It does need to be cared for. Soak the hair loose, then should be trimmed (shaved) around the edges so the hair can't re-stick into the wounds. She might need oral ABX as well. What a very bad vet! :(
I'm appalled at that vet! We provided ample bedding for every single animal we had in the kennels, sick or boarding. The one and ONLY reason we ever took bedding out of the kennel was if the dog tore it up and ate it, which put them at risk for a blockage.

And that comment - "she's an inside dog" - do they only care for "outside" animals there? Sheesh!

Dawn is right - soak the hair loose and trim it away from the wounds. And find another vet ASAP.

Now that I think about it, does this vet claim to be AAHA certified? If so, call AAHA and let them know. There's no fine involved, but they might decide to revoke their certification.

Good luck, and hugs to Ecco.
Actually, I just checked and there are NO vets in our town that are AAHA accredited. Her regular vet is pretty good. I was only using the other guy because they had a boarding facility. But, like I said: NEVER AGAIN!

I will take my girls with me everywhere if necessary.
Oh man, I would be livid too. Hopefully they are treating her for free, since they caused this. I would also refuse to pay for most of the boarding charges since they didn't properly take care of your dog.

Even if you can't make a complaint to the aaha, you can make a complaint to the better business bureau. As bad as it sounds to call your dog property, they damaged your property when it was in their care, causing you to have to spend money to repair it.

You can also make a complaint to the mistreatment of animals at their facility to the american humane society or other animal welfare people.
Not wanting to board Dex and Win was a major point in our final decision to buy an RV.

I am livid too. Poor Ecco. Sad excuse for a vet AND staff. Hope that you will report this abuse. I would make certain that your regular vet knows about the neglect so they won't recommend the boarding there. Also, if you have a town blog online, or newspaper opinion column, you could state the facts and perhaps save someone else all this pain.

Hope Ecco feels better soon :hearts:
Don't know your location, but if in US you can write them up on Angie's List. Granted you have to be a member first to write the review, but it is one avenue to vent.
Ooooh poor ecco that's just absolutely dreadfull what happened. I hope they did not charge you for the anti-biotics as well or I would if it was me, smashed them in the face. !!!

Now keep a good watch on her eye if you suspect a infection starting there. Ecco is on anti-biotics but I would also bathe the eye in warm saline solution too. Get a cotton wool ball, soak in the saline and going from the outer corner of the eye to the centre corner wipe. Then a dry cotton wool ball and just dab to dry off.

You can also do the same on the wounds to release the hair stuck to the dried blood. You can do that daily as well as the antiptic spray till they clear up.

I'd be seeing another vet, getting them to check out her eye and wounds and sending the bill to those idiots
ugh! What a horrible experience! I'm so sorry. What about a pet-sitter? Can someone come to your house and stay with Ecco?
:(

"Livid" about covers it! I have known 2 people whose dogs have passed away while being boarded in a vet clinic's kennel (a Great Dane in Illinois, and a German Shepard in California). The assumption is that a pet will receive a higher level of care because of the association with the vet, but it's often not the case.

As others mentioned, you want to trim the fur away from the area, so that air can circulate around the wounds. I would bathe the boo-boos daily in a Chlorhexidine flush (diluted solution), and dab them dry. If you want to lightly cover them, so that Ecco doesn't injure them further when she flops down, you might want to take some tube socks and cut off the foot part. Then just slid the tube up over the leg so it covers the wound. It should be stretched out enough so that air can get in there, but not wide open to dirt and bacteria. (My poor hubby has sacrificed many a tube sock for Oscar's owies.)

If you are uncomfortable cleaning the wounds yourself, take Ecco to your regular vet and have them take care of this. And SEND THE BILL TO THE KENNEL!!

Oscar is so high maintenance that there is no way he could be kenneled. I have never spent a night away from him in nine years. If I go on vacation, he comes with. Hopefully you can find someone responsible who can care for Ecco when you're gone.

Each state has a Vetinary Board - you can lodge a complaint with them.

Ecco will be okay.
I had a bad experience with boarding, so the pet either go with us or stay with family. Bennett hated the kennel so much, he tried to dig out. It was concrete and his front nail were so worn down that he couldn't walk due to the pain. A month of pain meds/steroids/antibiotics. It wasn't the boarding facility's fault, but....
What a shame. I would be livid too. So sorry you had that terrible experience and hope Ecco heals quickly.

I had a bad experience boarding several years ago and haven't done so since. I use a house sitter or take them with us.
She's doing better. I had to put a cone on her to keep her from licking her wounds. I am going to take her in to her regular vet to day and see if they can clean them up a little better for me.

Ecco has boarded before in other cities and she was fine every time. We just moved here last year and haven't met enough people to feel comfortable with in-home boarding, but we are going to get serious about finding someone now. I refuse to let this happen again.
Took Ecco to her regular vet. They shaved the hair and cleaned out the wounds. They said there was dried pus matted into the wounds and that it looked like she must have been lying on wet concrete to cause the original injury. We went back to the kennel with the bill from her vet. They tried to say again that it wasn't their fault, but we stayed strong. They refunded all of the money and promised to cover any other vet bills associated with the injuries.
Poor Ecco. Glad your vet was able to clean up her boo-boos, and that you handed that bill to the kennel.

Laurie and Oscar
So glad you won that battle with the "boarding kennel" (and I'm using that term loosely!) I hope poor Ecco heals quickly!
That is why we never "board with a kennel" anymore-once ovcer 30 years ago was enough-sounding similar to your story. Good that you managed to get them to refund and cover your costs. If we can't take Sprocket or a family member isn't around we don't go nowadays.Poor love, hope she is better soon. Bet she won't leave your side now?x
