Has took a fancy to chewing, and digging up my plants yet again and seems to have a new fettish for loo roll - obviously thinks he is not oes and andrex pup ! Have to say im not too concerned about that what i am concerned about is when he is out on walks at times he seems to have turned into devil dog ??? Hes such a friendly dog, when out on walks he always goes to the owner first for a cuddle before checking out their dogs but now he seems to be so exited with everyone he meets hes started jumping up at them not to bite just for affection ! and yea hes strong im afraid hes gona knock someone over or worse hurt them. Hes pulling more on lead and am beginning to dread walkies ! Someone said could be his hormones kicking in - teenage pup perhaps ? Im being firm with my commands and feel poor Bo always seems to be in the dog house at the minute Whats happened to my loveable Bo ?? Help, Susan |

Yep, you've got a willful teenager on your hands. He's: 1. testing you to see who is really boss, 2. starting to feel hormones. If left unchecked you will have a monster by 14 months which is where rescue often comes into play as people give up on the pup. The solution is to double down on training. Toilet training isn't one of them, most of the times they remember that, but begin at Manners 101. Remember, minimal loving but the rest they have to earn it. The feeling of "Oh, Mom doesn't give me love unless I'm good" should turn this around again. Also read this: http://sonic.net/~cdlcruz/GPCC/library/alpha.htm |
Thankyou, yes am doing all these things, and read the alpha dog information very interesting. At least i know im doing the right thing maybe need to be a bit more firm. probably the major issue is jumping up, but he seems to be slowly getting the message on this one. My problem is controlling him pre-jump ! I know hes gonna go so am reigning in the lead as short as I can at the risk of broken arm ! and making him sit as soon as i sense hes ready to bound. So not sure if thats the right thing to do ? Am I making him worse by doing that as he can sense im pulling him back ? What other verbal command do i give ? No jump ? Sit ? Stay ? Leave ? Thanks, Susan |
You want to break the brain from thinking "jump." Distract him. Sit is good. Be consistent. Whenever he meets people, have him sit.......be it you, other members of the family, strangers, etc. Develop a sound, harsh and quick, you can use when you sense something amiss is about to happen. It must be harsh enough so he hears it even though going into brain lock. This eliminates, the "no jump", "no bark", "no chew"........all concepts he's not ready for. Don't confuse with multiple commands at one time. For him to be consistent, you must be first.........and that's far harder. Fighting the lead, you loose. He's stronger. You are rewarding good behavior, right? Sometimes praise works wonders, even on us uprights. |
Thanks, yes am rewarding good behaviour, thanks for your advice, Ill keep going. I think the problem is that hes so friendly and since he was a pup all the other dog owenrs weve met in the park and on walks have made a fuss when they meet him. Which is great but now poor Bo thinks everyone 2 legged person he meets wants to clap and cuddle him ! So shall soldier on be firm and hope i can bring him back down to earth lol. |
you won't break his spirit as long as all is kept upbeat. to the little guy |

Toilet training this was the biggest problem for me when my puppy join my family. It took 2 week, but finally everything is ok. |
