After several months now of medical management, cold laser and acupuncture, Simon is doing fairly well. He can walk, run some, play a little, get up without assistance even on hard floors, turn around and back up without falling! His harness wore awful sores in his shoulders, but he has been without it for a few weeks now and the sores are healing. He was on 60 mg prednisone and 400 mgs of gabapentin, but is down to 30 mgs of pred and 200 mg of gabapentin. At the beginning of all this he weighed 98 lbs but he's now at a svelte 78 lbs. I hope to wean him down to a lower dose of pred. He seems happy. He loves his cuddles and pets and bully sticks and short walks and adventures in the backyard. I'm trying to plan to take him on a camping trip while he is still doing well...gentle walks. Bella is good with him. It's been both heartbreaking and then joyous to see his positive progress. Each day is a gift. |

What an awesome job you and Simon are both doing. It's heart breaking to see them when they're not managing. I admire your strength and perserverance and I'm so glad to hear that things are looking positive for Simon. |

Wonderful! Just a hint, from experience. Gabapentin is used to treat a variety of issues involving the nerves. Over the years, they have discovered that when it works well and people get better, they want to stop taking it (expense and side effects). The problem has been that if they need it again and try to restart it, it either doesn't work as well or just doesn't work. My mother has been on it for 4 years to control her trigeminal neuralgia. They have tapered the dose up and down as needed, but she will never go off of it. |
Mary how special is that, what a wonderfull change in Simon, you guys go and make the most of a special camping trip and also special hugs to bella for being a great sis to simon. Amazing update |
