Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Nikki |

I don't want to sound harsh but I'd find another vet. It sounds like it could be like hot spots or fever blisters related to allergies to anything from the weather to the food he eats and, from my experience, medicated shampoo might soothe it for a few minutes but it won't cure it. When my dog Lucy gets hot spots from her allergies, she gets a cortisone shot, follow up ith prednisone and, sometimes a soothing spray, kind of like doggy bactine. If the vet you have isn't treating your pup's symptoms, it would be good look for another before your puppy starts pulling out his hair and drawing blood. I hope it doesn't get that bad and I'm certainly not trying to scare you but I know how rough it can be if it goes on too long.
Good luck, I hope this helps! |
In the meantime, you can get some cortizone cream at your local PetsMart to help alleviate the itching. ButtersStotch is right, though, it needs to be treated with more than shampoo. Have a different vet take a look! |
Could be a lot of things like allergies, thyroid, some sort of parasite, (mange?), poison ivy (are you walking him in the woods, or by the road where there might be poison ivy?), I mean the list is endless.
Either go back to your vet or find another for help for your poor itchy guy! Good luck, and be sure to keep us posted. |
Sulfidine also helps with hot spots and I have found it to help with itchy areas. It cost about $4 |
Theres also a medicated shampoo with sulfer thats good for dogs with allergies, etc....
I agree with the others, I'd get a 2nd opinion. Its not really flea season (at least here), but I'd definetily check for a flea allergy. Sometimes you don't see the fleas, but all it takes is one bite to cause havoc on a dog thats allergic to them. |
sulfur tar shampoo is about the best thing for the skin... boy it stinks but it works really well! follow up with a nice conditioner to get rid of the smell.
the others covered everything, cept to check for fleas! One of my pooches has flea dermatitis and it's not fun! |
Poor baby!!!! Try childs dose of benedryl (my Vet has had me use it) for relief. Find a NEW VET!!! Also might want to try Aveno oatmeal bath (human) which is suppposed to sooth itchy skin. Also make sure he is kept in a cool place, heat makes it worse. I agree with the cortisone and prednisone regimine.
Tasker has had similar allergic reactions and all the above have been helpful. |
Perhaps try changing food--it's a tough thing to do at this age, but your furbaby may be allergic to your current food. What are you feeding? |
How's your pup? Has the vet checked him out yet? I hope it's not mange or something... petstores, shelters and mills run rampant with that and it can be almost impossible to get rid of.
Please let us know how things are going! |
