Can anyone offer any advice on it, please? |

No, but reading what you are reading, it doesn't sound good. I hope the steroids help. If Winston came from a reputable breeder, I'd report it back since it is an auto immune condition. There may be some gentic booboos creeping up in the line. |
I only know a bit about it in humans. 1. not very common 2. autoimmune disease 3. multiple forms some worse than the others 4. best results when diagnosed and treated early I looked it up in canines 1. multiple forms some worse than others 2. some have quite a good prognosis 3. UV light aggravates it so keep your dog out of the sun (check with your vet on that) 4. skin infection is the most common complication so again advice from your vet Good luck praying that it's a more manageable variation and that steroids settle it down quickly. My 10 yo lab has this. At first her nose was crusty, and my vet prescribed a steroid cream. It never really worked, and the lesions started to spread around her eyes, on her paw pads, and the edges of her ears. So, we went to the dermatologist for a biopsy and got the diagnosis. She started on a high dose of systemic steroids that she has now been weaned from, but she is still on Imuran every other day. She will be taken off of that eventually. She had to have weekly CBCs drawn at first, now tapered down to monthly, and her blood counts has remained normal. He also checked her liver status with lab work and an ultrasound before staring on her treatment. It has all cleared, and she is back looking like her gorgeous shiny black self. |
