Milorganite

I worked over my banana beds today to get ready for new plants that are enroute. I raked off the mulch then tilled in cow manure and scattered Milorganite over the top. I left the mulch off until the new plants come in. I knew the manure would be attractive to the boys but wasn't aware of what Milorganite was.

I acccidentally dumped some on the end of a walkway and before I could come back to clean it up Winston had his face in it munching away! Thank goodness for the Internet! Milorganite is dried and sanitized sewer treatment sludge from Milwaukee! It said if a dog ate an entire food bowl of it they may have issues but otherwise should be fine, Win probably got a couple spoonfuls. I washed away all I dropped and it is a non-issue.

Then there is the banana bed! Milorganite and manure! What a treat! A few minutes ago both boys got a drink from the pool then went over and rooted around for a while! Of course, next stop was to come thank Mom and Dad so now we both have muddy, poopy legs!

Ditto all that! :twitch:

and banana beds? You are planting bananas?
I never heard of this stuff...but then again, I am not a big planter of anything...Bananas? That is very cool! I though bananas grew on trees?
We used to have huge banana tress that came back every year but they suck a lot out of the soil. This year we had 3 come back and they are little guys. We're determined to get them big again. We have never gotten fruit but the trees are cool.

OK, that makes sense.
I was thinking they are big trees, and wondering what you needed to do. How long do they live? A long time, like a normal tree? Pictures would be good. :)
Milorganite........spooky stuff when you first hear what it is, but USDA and MAJOR protocols for making soil amendment from sewage... that stuff is really under scrutiny. Only concern I'd have is the heavy metals, but for the dogs and a few licks.......none. What is it with poop? Every time we had the septic tank pumped the dogs thought it was the ice cream man and his truck. Any spills were quickly covered but that didn't mean it was unsuitable for rolling. Yuck, worse that duck poop on a dog coat.

Bananas are not exactly trees in that they don't form a bark, wood or anything like that. They are actually herbaceous..........but grow to tree size. They are amazing fast growers so I'm not surprised they suck all the nutrients from the soil. Compost is the ideal way to get the goodies back into the soil.

You must live down around the coast.
What wonderful parents you are to supply your sheepys with there own "play" area. What fun they can have. I had a small indoor banana tree once, was a strange little thing, lived for about 5 years.x
We use Milorganite too and love how it works but dogs do love it, our basset lived to roll in it and Butchy thinks its great.
Here is what our bananas looked like in July a few years ago. I cut them off at the ground each year, they sprout about mid-April and grow until late September. The ones at the right (nearest the house) would grow well above the gutters with trunks 10-12" wide.

These originated from my in-law's neighbor who gave my father-in-law a couple sprouts almost 40 years ago. I got some from him for several houses over the years. I got 5 for this house 18 years ago. The original bed was the one on the right, the other 2 are transplanted sprouts.

This pic is old enough the junipers are now solid as are the hawthorns on the far side of them. I think it is from 2003.

We had 3 sprouts in the original bed this year, the other 2 have been banana-less for several years. My father-in-law passed away in 2007 so it is important to us to keep these alive.
Thanks for the pictures, and the banana facts. I had no idea...especially as they certainly can't grow here in MN!
