This...THIS is my front yard this morning (May 18th!) My birthday was spent at the vets with Bert He suddenly came down with a frightening rash . Turns out he's developed a (brand new) allergy...to mosquitoes!!!! . He back in the cone for another week-2 weeks till the rash goes away. On the bright side, the snow may have killed off all the mosquitoes . Sigh. No party for us. I had to cancel out of the outdoor art fair I was supposed to be doing today, and postpone the party due to horrible roads and general lack of much to celebrate . Gertie's out of the BOX tomorrow on schedule though! Oh, and we broke all historical records for latest snowfall, lowest temps on this date etc...yay? |

yeah, mosquito population will be down.......for awhile Latest snow date for Anchorage is May 22.........you came close!! |
Wow Laurel. Happy Birthday/Anniversary anyway! I've marked Alaska off the states that I would want to live in. lol I'm sure it's no surprised to anyone since I don't like cold or snow. lol I hope your snow goes away and all cleared up and you get back to your art fairs. |
Funny how the first snow of the year is beautiful and magical and then by the end you just want to weep! I hope that you managed to have a good birthday and anniversary! |
Wow! Hope things slow down, warm up, and everything else that is needed to help you get back to normal! Happy Birthday and Anniversary. |
So sorry that everything cancelled. That's just crazy weather. You might be due for a visit south |
Oh, I am so sorry for all that bad snow.......Hope it's very wet and disappears in no time. How far north in Alaska do you live? What can you do about Berts allergy to mosquitoes........when the summer comes back I hate the mosquitoes!!!!! |
Sorry but it is beautiful! Happy Birthday, anniversary and all the rest. I am curious...you have mosquitoes? I didn't think they survived in that cold??? |

I live in Eagle River, which is in South Central Alaska...not that far North of Anchorage. Its even worse farther North. The rivers up in the interior haven't even gone out yet, and Denali National Park ( a HUGE tourist location) is still locked in in deep winter. This is all so weeeiiird! For the mosquito allergy: my vet proscribed us a repellant (once a month, like for fleas) and said that he might need regular antihistamines if that wasn't enough . My poor dog. I'm on huge daily doses of antihistamine myself (for an autoimmune disorder) and one lovely side-benifit is that I can LAUGH at mosquitoes! |

Alaska (as well as Northern Canada and other Arctic areas) have some of the WORST mosquitoes anywhere. Lucky for us though, they don't carry any of the scary diseases that tropical ones do...no Heartworm or Malaria. They are just HUGE, abundant and vicious . I have no idea how they survive the winter...probably just the eggs do? they hatch out in early spring. I'm hoping that this late sudden cold snap will have killed off the ones that had already hatched out, and maybe we'll have a low mosquito summer . |
