Do you think he's marking territory?

Now that Barney is *gulp* housetrained while he in on non-carpeted floors, we would really love to be able to trust him while we are away (or even in a different room) in the rest of the house (which happens to be carpeted. The problem is, about 96% of the time he pees on the carpet. We only allow him out when he's 'on empty' and at first I thought it was because he was so excited about the cats and peeing because of that, but they don't have to be near him for him to pee. He's peed pretty much everywhere, and occassionally we'll get the sense that he might be about to (walking around, sniffing, getting a little agitated) so we'll go to take him out, but he'll just stare at us before we get there and pee...
Any suggestions? (about the cause or a cure!?)

I'm still waiting on Tag to be reliable in the kitchen. He has no clue he's doing anything wrong, and I've pretty much been keeping him outside. I am also trying to get him to not go on the deck, he is just to lazy, and is a dribbler...esp once he is released from the kennel. I have him going on command sort of while outside on leash, and he was perfect in the camper.

Part of me thinks he can do it, and then I remember he is a puppy and I am a lazy teacher.

If he still goes on the carpet 96% of the time, he might just like to go there because it has the smell already, it's absorbent and convienent. You could tie him to you, on a short enough leash that he will pee on your foot if he has to go.
Panda is a girl, so Im really not sure what to tell you...I did take Panda outside to go potty every 20 minutes or so for the first 2 weeks...The first time that I let her roam the house I was very afraid...so I followed her around..while brushing my teeth, getting dressed, making dinner etc...then something just clicked...she got it...except for her little wee-wee episode last week ( I think she was mad, as she did it right in front of my husband with the look of {so whatcha gonna do about it }) She has been very easy to train...like I said, I think boy dogs are different...sorry that Im of no help...just rambling...
Clyde used to do the same thing. After we trained him to ring the bell, it got much better. It was like he finally understood the association of outside and telling us. What Daisie said about the scent is very true too. While Clyde hasn't an accident on the carpet in a long time, poor Lucy was on some medication that made her drink a lot more and she couldn't hold it a couple of times. Clyde loves to sniff that area now and it makes me nervous every time he walks over there. I've been treating it with some stuff that supposedly kills the scent and he's losing interest. Does Barney seem to always go for spots that he's gone before?
See, Barney is good about letting us know now (while on tile) that he needs to go out (and we know his signals now too) and since we still control when he gets water we also know when he 'should' need to go out.

About the peeing on carpet, it usually isn't on the same place. He's not a leg lifter (which I am glad about) (I also don't know why/if that is relevant to anything!).

We have the downstairs and the upstairs (we try to keep him downstairs which is is usually good about). He has peed in the upstairs hallway (carpeted), and in many different spots throughout the living room/dining room (also carpeted). We've cleaned each spot thoroughly with stuff (I'm not sure what brand it is) that is supposed to take away the odor for dogs. It would make more sense to me if he sniffed an already peed on spot and then went there again, but he doesn't. The only other thing that I can think of is that maybe there is still a faint scent on the spots he's already gone and that just brings up the thought of peeing and he searches for a fresh location...
I think that is also what goes on here...we use Pet stuff too after any accident...so he NEVER picks the same place twice. He has a full bladder so he will empty the bladder...it's very frustrating some days.

I think we have an outside dog until I can devote time to 100% watching him. He does not like sleeping in the kennel, he doesn't whine or bark, he just hits the door with his paw...over and over. There is no signal, he is feed 2 times a day, water is available tho he is not a big drinker.
It's weird because when Barney goes on the carpet, it is a very large pee--always- which is weird because we have just taken him out and watched him go a very long pee outside...
I guess we'll just have to keep trying...I sear, my parents' sheepdog was housetrained so easily...they just laugh at me now with all my compaints and say, Wait til you have a baby...Don't you just love when your parents get enjoyment out of your problems!
I don't know what it is about these guys....lol.... actually my first oes trained very easily, but my current two have taken forever. Dancer especially. Sky is pretty good, and will even let me know most of the time now, by getting bouncy, and going to the back door and back to me etc. Dancer still does nothing to let me know, however she is doing pretty good. At 18 months old she ought to be!
I tried everything.... I'm not really sure if any one idea worked better than another, I think it was just a matter of maturity for them, consistency for me, and routine for all of us.
I stand by that you can strap a diaper on a baby. You don't hear too much about kids peeing on the carpet all the time! If that were the case, they'd make kid pee stain remover instead of pet stain remover!

Seriously though, I'm sorry you're still going through this with him. Clyde was such a challenge too so at least know you weren't alone in the slow housetraining.
Diapers, huh...not a bad thought...
We already go to Costco to get giant tubs of cottage cheese for him...maybe we could pick up some diapers too.
Just kidding. I am not going to put diapers on my dog
