Hes such a clumsy dog, always bumping into things and falling flat on his face whilst playing ball so not sure if its his hair or just clumsy dog syndrome ? Thanks for any advice, Susan |

At 7 months it is time to either trim or make sure he has a top knot or piggies so he can see. If he is running in to things and falling it is probably because he can't see--not that he is clumsy. The picture below is Murphy at 7 months with a top knot. You can order small bands from pet supply stores or you can pick them up at Sally's or a drugstore. They need to be smaller at this age to hold the hair--as he gets older you can use a little larger band. |
Try tying it up first and see how it goes. The little bands from Sally's are best for puppy hair. Lyra is around the same age and didn't like it at first but realizes now how much she's missed. If you decide that's not a good look or your pup doesn't enjoy a ponytail or two. It can always be cut off but requires constant trimming to keep it out of a dog's eyes. |
Yep - you either need to pull it up out of the way so they can see, or trim the hair. My preference is to pull it up in a topknot or pigtails...but it's your choice! |
Try to make different topknots: Joy's first topknot......so charming. They fall off easy. So I always had some more elastic bands in my Pocket. |
Hair clips look cute |
Definitely time to get the hair out of his eyes! Benson started with clips, then we went to 2 topknots (one over each eye) as her hair got longer, then one in the middle. I've done french braids, and the last few weeks I've been keeping her in this basketweave that came up on the forum a little while ago. This one really opens up her peripheral vision, and I can see a definite difference during agility. I've always gotten her hair supplies from the local drug store. These clips: http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/Scunci-Barrettes-37214-A?skuId=421824 These elastics for the thicker topknots: http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/Scunci-No-Damage-Thick-Elastics?skuId=300173 And these little ones for smaller knots and the basketweave thing: http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-detail/Conair-Mini-Ponytailers-Black?skuId=445895 Have fun! |
"I" prefer a trim and yes, get the hair out of the eyes so they can see. You do have to trim quite often(every few weeks) and keep in mind peripheral vision. Simon's no problem but Gar hates having his face touched so trimming gets done piecemeal. He's actually gotten MUCH better than when we first got him. Then he couldn't stand having his face touched AT ALL. Lots of grabbing the face and kisses on the snout. |
I have always trimmed our sheepys so have trimmed Sprocket. He is the best one yet-he does turn away but when I ask for a kiss he turns back and lets me trim. He gets hairs the grow on his inner eye area of the nose that grow into his eyes so have to keep those trimmed and he is soooo good for me-Of course ther is a nice "treat" afterwards. Hates me going to the "tail" end tho!!x |
When Charm gets her summer cut next week, we are going to trim around her eyes. She is patient with the updo, its all she has ever known. But she has to have it redone several times per day due to rubbing, playing, etc. And last year, her wet topknot was a mess to remove after swimming. Neither of us liked that |
Thanks for replies , Bo is off to the groomers this weekend and have decided will have his eye hair trimmed afterall. Thankyou for all pics of topknots, just gorgeous ! Susan |
You should post pics Susan! |
