Was not sure which section I should post this. Here it goes. Mao loves to swim! we have just opened the pool last weekend, and he was the first to go in. We shaved him about a month ago in preparation for the summer since a heavy thick coat takes a lot longer to dry. In any case, As I said, Mao loves to swim and he does well in the water. but.... when he gets outs, after he shakes the water off, he is liked a possessed dog, trying to dry himself off by rubbing himself on any surface he can find. Brick, a chair, a wall and the floor. the problem is that our pool is an above ground pool and the deck around it is made out of treated wood. Well, last tuesday, he swam with my wife when I was working and When I cam back and petted him I notice a big lump on one of his side. It was a huge splinter he must have goten while rubbing himself on the wodden deck. We tried to get it out but decided the vet would do a better job. so we went and the vet proceeded to extract the 7 inch splinter and almost half an inch wide. Poor boy! What amazed me the most is that it did not bother him one bit. He is now on antibiotic since there was the beginning of an infection. He is doing fine, and there was not need for stiches. So my question is: Does your sheepdog goes crazy trying to dry himself when he leaves the pool? If so does anyone have some advice to share on How I can help him dry himself off. I am curently helping him dry himself using a towel but that towel is soaked after 4-5 seconds. Thanks Thierry |

Ouch, poor Mao! Glad you found it before he became ill. That's an impressive splinter Charm loves to swim too, and rolls around in two towels until she feels acceptably dry. We play a game before the towels are given to her. Both of us grab her and start playful drying, over the face, vigorous body rubbing and all the while, she tries to get both towels. She loves this game, and it works for all of us. Probably Mao is going to rub, just a dog thing. Make some kind of game with it, or teach him to let you dry first and then put the towels in a safe place for rubbing. Of course, lavish treats are expected At least he will dry quicker as summer turns up the heat |
Brenda has great tips. I towel dry Monty's head and ears really well as these being wet make him the crazy run around Monster. I also distract Monty with treats and games. |
Poor boy!! How about spreading a blanket on the deck for him to roll in? Gracie will pull big towels down and roll in them. Of course, she never takes the 'dog' towels but take the nice ones that my sister gave me for Christmas. |
I second the towel solution. Tiggy thinks I hang towels on the rail in the bathroom for her to rub up and down on. What?... they're for humans to use when they exit the shower? Nooooooo, they're for Tiggy to rub up and down on after her bath or if she feels a tad itchy and when they finally get rubbed off the towel rails onto the floor then she falls on them and rolls around to dry her back. It's quite funny except for the fact that I need to wash and dry towels for the humans. |
Joy does the same thing, she is rubbing into all the furnitures if I am not there with some towels. She does it after beeing into the shower if her head or back is wet too not only the feet. Think it's a dog thing: How to get rid of the wet stuff! |
Sprocket love a towel as well. He is quite a little beast when done the towel wash,he pulls them of the line and "hides" them in his special place,by the apple tree. Least he doesn't actually dig and bury. He will swipe a sponge if sees one. When we visit mum-in-law she wont shut bathroom door so the sponge gets "borrowed". I have to go and put out of his reach whenever we visit anyone-mad dog!!x |
That is quite the "sliver" he got! I'm happy he got it removed...and hoping no more repeats of that. |
Thanks for all those tips. I had started the towel on the floor thing but I guess he continued without it while I was not there. I will surely continue as I find he seems to like this game. Just two more days of antibiotics. the wound is healing very nicely. Now it is becoming to cold for human to swim so we should resume the swimming in a week or so, maybe more, after all it's still spring, not summer and in Montreal it can go from 24 celcius to 4 celcius in a matter of hours these days. thanks again for sharing you experience. Warm regards from MTL. Go Sens Go. (I am a habs fan but I now root for the team that beat us and whish tem the stanley cup) |
