Any ideas about stopping this from happening. Do you think giving a whole load of fish oil would work. They both love swimming but it is torture for Buster afterwards. |

Oh he is blowing his coat that's why clumps of fur are coming out when he scratches. |

Getting wet, junk in his coat and skin from the dirty water, and spring shedding make a really good recipe for hot spots (experience speaking!) This actually came up as a discussion on Monday when we were pack hiking. Our organizer has Malamutes - and we did a hike last week that basically was wading in muck and wet trails over the tops of our shoes in many places. The dogs were just a MESS! (OK, us too, and my socks will never recover!) She had to diligently towel and brush her male who hasn't blown coat yet who was covered in it up his legs and belly and chest. It was a long drive home and she didn't want it all drying on and starting to irritate before she could get home and bathe him. |
Even after bathing he itches. He got a hot spot lat year when he got lice from biting the area so I am keeping a vigilant eye. Can't find any fleas or lice on either Buster or Monty. Buster is still scratching, but dont know if his skin is still irritated from the swimming, blowing his coat or fleas. |
Have you tried coconut oil? It's supposed to be amazing for dogs, as well as humans! I use it! Haven't tried it for the pups yet, have to get a new jar. |
both.......sounds like hot spots coming on as Dawn said. Doesn't take much to get them started. I'd also suggest getting on the Omega 3 and 6 band wagon....I use salmon oil on their food. There's also a somewhat difficult vitamin you can also add, Niacinimide..........not Niacin. I know Dawn gives Vit E. Haven't heard about coconut oil before, hmmmmm |
Yep - Vit E here, but not all the time. Like right now no one is on it, for some reason. Oh, but it is in the senior supplement Harley gets - so one is on it! Coconut oil - my daughter Lisa is hooked on it. She's into this holistic mom's group (just started her own chapter in fact), and she buys it by the gallon and makes all kinds of stuff with it. She just had used it on her too-red skin after being at the lake, and swears it toned down the red and she felt great the next day. No peel, no burn. She gets her's online by the gallon, but says most grocery stores carry it. In the healthy/ natural foods section of the store she goes to. |
Yup! It's supposed to help with their paws if they are dry and cracked, you can rub it on the hot spots, and give it as a supplement even!!! I use it in a lot of stuff, even my coffee! Here are a couple articles on it. http://dogingtonpost.com/benefits-of-coconut-oil-for-dogs/#.Ud2pr6wUuRM http://www.deliciousobsessions.com/2012/06/coconut-oil-for-healthy-happy-pets-why-its-good-and-how-to-use/ http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/the-health-benefits-of-coconut-oil/ On a side note, my parents Newfie is prone to hot spots this time of the year also. From being in the water with the damp undercoat just not drying out enough. And the humidity. Poor guy! |
We use coconut oil to cook, as a supplement and on our skin/hair. The dogs love it....they come running every time we open the jar They get a spoonful once a day on average. Topically we occasionally smear it on Izzie's nose. Haven't had to use it elsewhere. I could see them licking it off any where they can reach. They lick it off my legs when I use it |
Have to try the coconut oil. Buster stopped scratching after he had blown his coat. He did start developing hot spots, but we were quick to get cream on them and keep the fur trimmed around the spots. There were hot, red patches popping up all over the place, but after three weeks it was over. |
