I've used some snow fence, one clothes pole, and a fence stake to block off the area I'm trying to fix. I have the seed, but I need something to fertilize it with. I don't want to use any of they typical fertilizers available because they are toxic. I want something non-toxic. The guy at Home Depot suggested either Scott's Natural Lawn Food (http://www.scotts.com/smg/goprod/organi ... rod100040/) or Milorganite (http://milorganite.com/). Does anyone have any experience with either of these products? I understand there is some sort of corn meal based fertilizer that is non-toxic. Anyone use something like this? Does it work? |

We just had ours reseeded. Our landscaping guys fertilized with good old fashioned sheep manure. |
Buy some sheep. You'll get the fertilizer you want and they can keep the grass trimmed. Vance |
LOL - I was going to say sheep! You can buy it....or just get some from someone with sheep. You could come here and help yourself! |
That Milorganite product I linked above is actually human poop. It comes from the Milwaukee municipal waste treatment plant. Don't ask me how they collect & process it. Vance, If I ever got a sheep, there would probably be a dead sheep in my yard. Brick would probably try to bring it down. |
I would say sheep first... Scott's product second. |
Water it yourself first pee of the day! |
Milorganite is good, we use it for everything, it won't burn the grass if you spill it and it works well. Also good for us because deer don't like it so it protects my tulip bulbs. It is also cheaper than a lot of the other products. |
I'd lean toward the Scotts product. Milorganite had (has) a lot of heavy metals and thus the NFL players of years past contended some of their health concerns had to do with heavy metal poisoning. If there's a way to remove the heavy metals I hope it has been done. Indeed it is made from municipal sewage that is at least hot composted (very specific temperature controlled) to kill pathogens. Albuquerque did it for years as well and used the product on golf courses and parks........I have no idea if they still do because when I retired, I retired from all knowledge. Scotts Natural is made from feather meal, bone and blood meal and sulfate of potash. It's what I would have recommended but thankfully Scotts put all in one container. Alas, it is not "time release" as the processed fertilizers......to release slowly. So be careful in application, too much and the rapid release will burn the little grasses. |
I was working at Scott in R&D when this product was just being developed... I did all of the extract testing for leach and toxin for the regulatory department. Love Scott's ( Scott's is a homegrown Marysville Oh company) and their products! |
