In her first two reports she had a couple N's, but this last one she really tried hard. She got K's all the way through, and even her teacher said how much she has improved in all areas. They expect alot more from them at the end of year too, so we are very proud of her. What have you given your child in the early years to reward them. Aside from the words, have you gotten them something tangible. She will be 6 yrs old in October. She does not like dolls...or girlie things yet. Any cool ideas, that she might like in this age group. |

Yay Maddie!
Even young kids appreciate money. I know it's not as personal but there are ways to personalize it. My grandma used to give us a dollar for each good grade in a card that she'd write something in telling us how proud she was of us. I still have the cards to this day. It was cool though because I could appreciate how much things cost and gave me an idea of the value of a dollar. At the same time she bought as all these cute little piggy banks so that those of us who were savers could put it away. My sister saved all her money all the way through high school. When she finally cracked it, she had hundreds of dollars! I spent mine as soon as I got it but I still have the bank! |
I suppose the good thing about her age is she doesn't need alot of money. I could give $10-20 to spend her way, on whatever. Go to ToysRus or something.
I am trying to have the kids make decisions now, and stop them from wanting everything in sight. Now they can have 1 thing when we do allow them something, within a price range of course. In the end they have 3-5 items picked and they then must decide which one they will buy. They are pretty good at this, and usually pick quality over quantity, and item over food. My reward was usually a vacation to my aunt and uncles for the summer, and my grandpa would give them money so I'd have a little to spend...altho I never got to have it. I was supposed to shop for clothes for the next year. |
What about taking her alone to an icecream parlor and let her have at it...with a double scoop with sprinkles? Icecream is always better at a shop than the freezer... |
I try really hard not to reward with food...I have weight issues, and as a child was always rewarded with sweets, and I took that with me. So I am deathly afraid my kids will carry on this thinking, so I reward with objects and leave icecream to parties, and desserts...not for jobs well done.
Even dr appts, if I take them they can have a toy, even from the dollar store...they don't care. But that sounds like a great idea for the party...build you're own sundae kinda thing. I agree she would love that. We do alot of one on one time with each of them. |
Both of our kids made the Superintendents honor roll all year long, and we reward after every report card. We have done places like Chuck e Cheese, or Incredible Pizza. There is another place called....well, I have forgotten as it closed down here, but it had lots of tunnel things to go through. Places like that have age appropriate games and rides for all ages. We have also taken weekend trips to other zoo's or museums. You might go see a movie at the theatre, if there are any kid movies out.
It could also be a day at the park going bike riding bowling or skating. We have a big hill that we go sliding down on a sled. LOL Who needs snow.....LOL We have a place called Build-a-Bear that is really cool too. We go for each birthday and get each kid a bear to build and dress. They love that tradition. I could ramble on with family-fun activities, but I will stop now. Tell your kids great job on their report cards!! I love bragging about mine and hearing about the accomplishments of others. Great job! Stormi and co. |
I usually get them a gift each year at the end of the school year, 2 of the boys are getting skate boards, one boy is getting a new video game, and my daughter got a beautiful sterling silver watch engraved for her graduation this year. My parents and grandmother all usually give them a card with money, they don't care if it is 5 dollars or 50 dollars. |
Thanks for all the suggestions, can't convince hubby into chucky cheese...but the kids just LOVE that place.
I took her to Build a Bear twice now, and we really like that place, unfortunately it get to expensive. I might just let her pick a new outfit fot her teddy or the border collie dog she got from the last report card. They have Boxer dogs now, I suggested they create a sheepdog...hopefully. She would LOVE to go back to this store, it's very popular with her. I suppose she could get a minature puppy, and have a sibling for the other baby puppy. You would think I would know her well enough to pick something, but everytime I do it sits in a box or on the shelf. She's too young to understand saving the money. She got a free pass to the zoo, and free pass to the water park...that will used for sure but we will go as a family. I was hoping to find her something that is just for her, esp since now the Sponge Bob party is for Parker...we try really hard to create unique special moments for them as individuals...too often we treat them like twins (14 mths apart). Keep sharing this is giving me great ideas for next year when we can celebrate both of them moving on to the next grade. |
How about a book. Something she would like that is HERS to keep and read over and over. Either something that SHE can read to you or something YOU read to her! We have read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Little House Books, Charlotte's Web....and then watched the videos together as a family!
Great memories and a reward that fits "the crime" lol Don't forget to put her name, date and reason in the front cover! |
Michele, that's what I was thinking too. As a lifelong reader a new book meant more to me than any doll or game. Perhaps start a collection of something that you can add to for each special acheivement. |
That is a great idea, the same idea as the K teacher, each kid went home with a new book, I was very suprised. I am always getting her books through school, and computer games...sometimes I wish she was just a touch older, and would appreciate diary's, bead/crafts, etc.
I think I'll just take her out and spend the day looking, and she can pick something just for her. I have a feeling we will end up at Build a Bear again, she wants the Kitty now. |
aww...congrats to her!
We always got $10 for every A, but that was when we were older. I'm not sure what girl toys are popular right now, so I'm no help. Now, if you need help with a boy gift, I'm great at that. |
For when anyone's creative little girl or boy gets older, there is a neat toy out called Illu-story. The child writes their own story and does all the art inside, then you send it off and you get a hardcover story that your child can have forever.
My daughter really loves learning, and even at 4 and 5 loved educational computer games. For family games, the Cranium games are a blast for any age. Over the years, for Christmas we try to get a big together present for them. We got one of the "moon bounce" things. Ours is called a "Bounce Around". It is 9 foot squared and holds up to 250 lbs. We set it up in our living room in the colder months, and outside in the warmer months, it has been a huge hit with both of our kids, and all the neighbor kids. It sets up or down in just a couple of minutes, and keeps them entertained for a long time. We have had ours now almost 3 years, and it has always worked great. I have also emailed Build a Bear about getting a sheepie a few months ago. I keep my fingers crossed that it is soon. Joey has the black bear, the orange cat, the border collie, and a Beagle. Ashlan has the reading bear, the purple cancer bear, the white cat, the unicorn, and the flop eared bunny. You should hear the names that young kids can come up with... LOL We have the zoo pass, but down here in Oklahoma, during the day it is too hot for people or animals to stay out in the heat. We are wanting to get the water/amusement park season pass, but I wasn't sure there would be enough for Joey to do. He is about 42 inches tall, do you think there is enough for him to ride on? I also guess I fear the germs in public pools. Oh, and while I am rambling on about fun toys and fun things to do, it reminded me of Joey's eczema. We finally got to a dermatologist as his skin had stopped being treated by the prescriptions that our family doctor had been giving us. The dermatologist took a few looks at his poor bleeding skin and was able to give us 3 different things to treat him. 2 cremes, and a type of Antihistamine. Benadryl doesn't work for Joey. Well, we saw immediate healing and now 4 days later the open sores are just a sad reminder. We go back in 6 weeks to see how everything is coming along, so I think we will have great news to go back in with. I wonder if the doctor will shy away from a big hug from me....LOL Sorry, such a long email. Stormi and co. |

Because I have no kids, I had never heard of this. I just looked it up and, wow, how cool is that? This would have been the coolest thing for me when I was a kid. My mom saved all the little stories and drawings I did. What a great keepsake. I think I'm going to get one for my niece! |
Stormi: Madelyn would LOVE to live at your house with all the Build a Bear choices. She has the black bear with no tail...it needs a tail to fit the clothes. The Border Collie is named Russell...she named it him at the store and forgot her about her uncle Russ (daddy's brother).
Now she wants the cat, or the purple bear...for us it's $30+ to get just the animal, then the outfit...you can't leave without spending $50. It is worth it when you see her sleep with them, and they take turns too, then the others all have these little beds in her room with doll blankets. Well only her favorites get a bed, the others stay in a pile. Parker gets dollar size execma on his back once in awhile, I have it on my hands, and occasionally on the shoulder. So sorry he is goes through that. It helps now that we keep his room with humidty in the winter, I haven't seen a flare-up in a very long time...come to think about it. Mine too has been dorminant...we went through all the creams too. I like the idea of creating her own story and putting it into a hardcover...she is very creative sometimes. But she does have a hard time staying at one thing and finishing it. So we don't do much for crafts, unless it something like painting where she can get an instant gratification from it. She is great on a computer, we always get educational games for them to play. We got the V-Smile, so they will learn and play. They haven't played nintendo yet. With the school book orders every month, we buy 3 books every month and an occasional CD rom. |
BOOKS!!!!
Take her out to a special lunch, just the two of you. Then go to a book store and let her get what ever book she wants! |
Taskers Mom, that would have been the best reward for me when I was a kid. Actually, that would still be a great treat for me An unlimited account at Amazon... |
