Also, when he is really happy, he pants heavily. Any ideas what could be going on? Thanks all. Y'all have known Pirate since he was a baby, and he has turned into a lovely elderly gentleman. Deborah |

First, maybe he's hot. Spring is a difficult time for our hairy kids. Due to his age I'd also be concerned about health problems. First is heart problems or lung problems. Second is pain from injury or developing arthritis, etc. Then we get into weird territory where they are sick.......like Cushings or something. If opening windows at night to make the room quite cool doesn't help (like are doing with Harry right now) then I'd be calling the vet for a go over. |
Hi Deb. Oscar pants 24/7, but this sounds like a new behavior for Pirate. My first thought was "pain". Have you noticed him having trouble getting up, any indications of arthritis? Any indications of tummy discomfort? Does it only happen at night? He could just be too warm, but our weather has not exactly been "spring-like" as of late. Is his coat longer than usual? I hope he's just too toasty. Laurie and Oscar |
Hi Laurie and Oscar! So good to see you! Tony told me I'm totally neurotic and that Liz pants a lot too, but since Pirate is bigger, it seems more dramatic. We are going out of town in a couple, but when we get back Pi is due for his annual check up. Hopefully, he's just a fatty pants (at 99 pounds!) and just needs to lose weight. With him so close to the 10th birthday, I am neurotic about him. I want him with me FOREVER! |
Hello, when they get to that age I think we worry more like when they were babies. I remember the panting with Fred-went to the vet to be told just bit to warm and all was ok but was great piece of mind.x |
