I'm asking because I bought a midwest 48" crate with a divider, but seems that there are large gaps around the bottom with out a floor grid. thanks |

I forgot to ask, What size crate would be good to transport a 10 week old for 4 hours? The breeder said a crate that would hold a lab but as I read, that varies quite a bit. |
I'm not clear on what you are asking? A floor grid? |

Those are a raised surface, suspended, and the dog has to lay on the metal grid. Highly uncomfortable. Some people use them, so the pee and poop fall through. Commonly used with lots of little breed dogs who are all in one crate. OK - not common, but when I see them, that's usually the case. |
How large are the gaps you are talking about? If you're talking about the very bottom of a wire crate, there should be a plastic or metal tray over so your pup will be on a smooth surface. I agree with Dawn on the floor grate. Last weekend there was a crate full of Papillon puppies that basically just used this as a toilet rather than staying in it for any length of time. As far as a crate to carry a 10 week old puppy home in... Not many people can resist holding the little furball on their laps with only a potty break or two on their ride home. |

I hope that's an option but I might be going solo. Eight hours round trip out of state and I can't find any takers for a road trip! |

Eight hours round trip out of state and I can't find any takers for a road trip! I would go! Show your friends a picture - who could resist? I have an assortment of crates, as we have all sized dogs. Can you borrow a crate that will fit in your car (assuming the one you are going to use at home doesn't fit, seeing you aren't using that one)? If you borrow one, make sure you wash it out well with bleach and water, or a similar disinfectant. |
I have a few friends who have offered crates.. I think they are 36" or 38"... would that be big enough? Definitely will be disinfecting. |

We had a crate with us when we picked up Benson, but I definitely had visions of holding her in my lap on the way home. She peed before we got to the breeder, peed again while we were there (we visited quite a while), and was a real angel with a pee and poo just before we got in the car. I thought I was safe! About 30 minutes into the ride, the passing 18-wheelers completely stressed her out, and she peed again. On my lap. All over my lap. I don't know how she built up so much pee in so little time, but it soaked straight through my skirt, front to back. Luckily, I had a change of clothes with me. I'm not sure what was worse, the urine-soaked skirt itself, or walking to the restroom past the high-school field trip looking like I had wet myself. Needless to say, she went into the crate after that. I didn't have any more clothes with me! And honestly, she settled right down and seemed much happier and more relaxed there. Wishing you safe travels and many happy years with your new furbaby!! |
Both Gracie and Mady were on our laps for the 6 hour drive, we did have towels on our laps but they were both fine, no accidents at all. Though if you're driving alone, I can see needing a crate, your brand new 8 week old puppy on your lap is a HUGE distraction! We'd want you and your puppy to arrive home safely. |
I think the reason the breeder asked that I bring a crate with floor grids is so she won't be sitting in pee possibly for 4 hours. I have a 48" crate with a divider for home but it won't fit in my SUV. I borrowed a 36" crate but there is no floor grid. I hope she is ok with that. Is a 36" crate big enough for a 10 week old puppy? |
Lyra is six months old now and still fits fine in a 36" crate. |
Does no one think to use absorbent training pads? On lap in crate etc' |
Just put some old towels in the crate, your baby will be fine. Yes, 36" crate is huge - way bigger than needed. Chewie rode the 7 hours home in a soft crate, no accidents. Just one stop to potty on the drive home. It was evening, and got dark, so that probably helped him settle in and go to sleep. And knowing his laid back personality in general (he's almost 7 now), and was that way through his puppyhood - this was a sign for the future of how unbothered he is with anything! Nephew Bond made the same trip 5 yrs later...and did one leg in his sire's breeders minivan, in one of her full sized OES's crates. Then rode in a small crate in the back of my Element for the final leg. He also traveled perfectly, pottied at the swap point. |
