Andis clipper....what size blade do I need?

Hi, I'm looking at purchasing a clipper for Charlie. I'm wondering what size blade would be best. Thanks. :D

It depends what you want to do.

I use a #3 or #4 blade to give a nice puppy cut but the coat cannot be matted. If the coat is matted you may need to use a 7. Basically the higher the number the shorter the coat will be. A #10 blade is great for shaving between the pads.
Thank you so much. I'm looking for a puppy cut for summer. Charlie is matting, which has been a problem. He's 8 months, so I don't know if it's the adult fur coming in that's causing the problem. I'm amazing at the amount of fur he has. I'm hoping I can keep up with it. :lmt:
At 8 months he is certainly going through a coat change. I highly recommend line brushing him a few times a week right now to keep on top of his coat until he has his puppy clip. A matt free coat will make the puppy cut turn out nicer and will make him feel better.
Like Amber said. :)

And at his age, it can be tough. If the mats are winning, or becoming too time consuming - it's a good time to do a haircut and give you all a short break.
10 is probably the shortest you'll ever use, that's an extreme clip down.....what I called the greyhound look. Slick. Sometimes mats can get to where only a 10 will get under them. Instead take the time, break them apart so you don't need to go down to slick.

The clipper may come with a 10, so if you can spring for 3 or 4 and a 7. You know the world is right if you can pretty much stay with the 3.
Like Amber and Dawn said.
Take heart in knowing this transition stage between puppy and adult coat is probably
the worst time to keep on top of mats for your dog's entire life. It will get better.
Meanwhile if you can keep up with it, brushing will have become a routine for both of you
and it will never get to the "what a mess" stage. Then it will get easier down the line.

Transitioning coat time is when I go really heaving on the dematting sprays like Ice on Ice
and if you bathe the dog yourself add in more than the usual amount of conditioner/detangling rinse.
If you have your dog groomed, you can also ask them to use a conditioner after the shampoo or even to use use a "heavier" type conditioner for a few months if they are already using one.

Thank you so much for the wonderful responses and advice. I didn't even know there was a detangling spray. I'll be heading out to get some tomorrow.

Keeping on top of the transition is tough- I found a product that is really helpful managing matts during this time. It is Isle of Dogs #63 spray. When you have a bad matt--spray the matt with it and wait just a minute or two and go back to it and it will comb right out. I don't use this for regular brushing just to spot the matts. Crown Royal #3 and Ice on Ice are both great for brushing out and line brushing.

You will probably need to order these products on-line, I think you can find he Isle of Dogs #63 at Dogs.com--Cherrybrook should have the other products.
What is the difference between a 4FC and a 4 blade?

Should I get a 4 instead? Just bought myself an Andis and they only had 4FC... not much at that particualr store to choose from blade-wise.

The FC stands for finishing cut......the basic difference is the FC blades are closer together to give you more of a, well....finishing cut.

I found this link which will probably explain it all better than I can.

Thanks for the link! :)

It seems I should be okay with a 4FC. I plan to shave my OES when it grows back, rather than fork out an arm and a leg for some stranger at the box-pet-store to do it. Just ordered a grooming table and am excited for its arrival, hopefully next week. I've scissor cut my previous OES in the past.
You will absolutely be ok with the 4FC, as long as there are no mats to work through.

I agree - it truly is not a hard task to shave down an OES into a nice cut and it will save you money in the long run even when investing in a really good set of clippers.
