It was 8 weeks when Bond and his sisters got their 1st real bath, and blow dry up on the grooming table. I was out visiting them and running Chewie in an agility trial. Kristine and I bathed them, and put them on the grooming table and dried and brushed them. We used the stand dryer on all 3. They all did great. I think the stand dryer is better - that way you can set it up and run it...and have both hands free and undistracted for working with the puppy. I continued that at home. In fact I guess Bond's 1st time with the hand held hose portable dryer was not until his 1st dog show. I of course had used my own blow dryer on his face....nearly a daily thing at our house! Ah, the joys of puppies. Chewie was 5 when Bond came into the world...that's a long interval. Of course we had Biscuit the lab in there - he's 3 - but that's entirely different!! edit - dug some pictures up! Kristine with sister Becky in the tub - Becky under the dryer and on the table - Bond in the tub - And letting him relax with a brush as he got his 1st dryer time! Our self-portrait camera shot after Bond was all dry and fluffy |
My pups are started up on the grooming table young too, usually by 7 weeks. Then at least once a week after that a pup is put up on the table and brushed, sometimes nails clipped (every other week), exposed to the noise of the hair dryer etc even if they aren't being bathed just so it's no big deal when it IS time for a bath. |
I got Teddy at 9 weeks old and started his brushing right away on the grooming table. Cindy |
The younger they start the better, am a groomer so the earlist I see a pup is 12 weeks which is grat, but most dont come till 6. Months plus so the whole grooming thingbis an ordeal. If your dog doesnt like the dryer, take a step back, use the dryer in the Same room, then try them with a fluff some time after, rewarding each time, treats, praise or hugs, you have to make it a good thing if you ever force it you are into a loosing battle because it can take sooo long to dry an oes depending on coat. Make it enjoyable thing, even if its 5 minutes on a dry coat then making them feel so special And leaving the table when you say so, not when they do a runner. Everything you do at an early age will have such an impact on when they are older. Short and sweet make it a treat and do all this inbetween baths So bathime they feel its a special treat. For example the other day I groomed a beagle, it was horrific in the bath ( it took 2 to bath and pin it down when it was a small pup not me ) but it remembered! and nochance with the dryer as it had never even heard a dryer. The dog left (7 months old) loving the bath and their homework was to get it used to the hairdryer (4towels later) hopefully next time it will be groomed/deshedded Calm bring calm, be patient and dont loose the battle because next time they start one step ahead |
The baths he is ok and no issues. brushing is no issue. colin used his large one on him and he was fine. I think because the hand held on was close so next time will do as you said in your posts. Anyway thanks for that |
We got lucky in that when we got Caitlyn at 8 weeks old, she had already been bathed nearly a dozen times, (she came from a very messy litter when it came to dinner time and gruel) and Wanda had also already started getting her used to brushing. Even Marilyn was surprised how well she did when she saw her at 5 months and how well she did on the table for nearly six hours of grooming when we went up there for her first real grooming. I'd have to say just like everything else, the earlier you start them the better for all. Vance |
Pah! hair dryers and vacuum cleaners are for eating, that's what Archie reckons anyway |
