Weight pull pictures - 3/16/13, Chewie is back!

I couldn't believe it - we hadn't done a weight pull competition since July of 2011. Almost 2 years!
I entered Chewie, and our 3 yr old lab Biscuit.
Biscuit had been having mental issues with pulling when we last pulled. He started out good, but then they resurfaced and he just stood there and didn't even pull. He had one time when he had trouble moving it 2 yrs ago, and he's SURE now that he can't, so he doesn't even try. I thought we had worked through it...but I guess not. :? He had previously pulled 2000# and I had stopped at that weight - this time he pulled 1260# (and was just flying) and then "remembered" he couldn't move it....crazy dog!

But here he is when things were going good!

Chewie has been a Champion for years now, and had a personal best of 2324#. The last few times we pulled he was solid, but his weights were down. He had been pulling in the 1400 - 1700# range. I decided to enter him anyway, as we had been away so long. Well, Chewie was SO happy...and worked so hard! He proved that the Champion OES puller is still in the game! :cheer: :cheer:
On Saturday he pulled 1830#, and almost got the 2020# round, but just couldn't break it loose. Sunday he worked and gave his all in the 1830# round to pull it, so I did a Handler Withdrawal, and stopped after that successful round.

Here are a series of photos in Saturday's 1830# final pull. My friend Donaven shot video, and pulled these frames from it:

Start line - leaning in to break it loose:

Each pull is 15 feet long, and must be completed in 60 seconds. In this one you can see (barely) the silver tape line as the wheel is crossing the plane and things are rolling.

Giving huge effort - digging in and nose to the carpet!

Picking up momentum, getting easier to move.

He completed this pull in 14.71 seconds, and it was almost 25 times his weight...go Chewie!

Very Impressive!! :clappurple: :clappurple: :clappurple: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:
:clappurple: Great job Chewie!
I've been wondering if Chews would get back into his sports. I realize with Bond and work, it's hard to do everything. Good idea to withdraw him after a successful pull. He so loves to work.......he's really putting everything into this pull. What a boy!!
Congratulations Chewie!!! You are amazing

Hang in there Biscuit, maybe next time!'
Great job Chewie :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

Funny you should mention this - Benson is doing the same thing! We hook her up, hubby goes to the end of the line . . . and there she stands! "What, Dad? I can't! The empty cart's too heavy!" (She pulled 1125 on Labor Day.) Our trainer has monthly practice/fun pulls, so we've decided to do just that until she gets over this hump. Less pressure, and less waiting between pulls.

Were you doing IWPA this time out? We've tried some NWDA competitions lately, since he can get closer to her to try to motivate her. But it doesn't seem to help.

Glad to see Chewie having such a blast!

They all go through that stage, and you just have to work them through it. For all that people say it's so physical of a sport, the mental part plays a really big part in it.
Chewie did, and it really didn't take long for him to figure it out.
Biscuit, well, he really is not the smartest pup around, and this is really throwing him for a loop. We had worked on it - having him pull, being a super cheerleader :cheer: , and then we took a long break (work schedule, showing in other sports, etc)...and I was hoping that ending training positive, and then the long break (like a year!) would all work out...but NOT, so it will be back to confidence work for Biscuit. :? I know he can do it. :D :D When we are out dog sledding and carting, he is Mr. Muscles and pulls like a draft horse just for the fun of it. :excited:
:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: Go Chewie! Congrats! :cheer: :cheer: :cheer:

I forgot to say - this was a UKC pull. We have a very active UKC group in our area, so that is what most pulls are near us. There was an IWPA pull not too long ago, but I was working that weekend, and couldn't go. :(
It was in Feb., and a snow pull. My guys love snow pulls, as they love being outside for them.
