She said you should never put yourself between the judge and the dog. Ive always gone right noones said anything before and at oes shows people turn right too. I dont know what im supposed to do. what are you supposed to do am I supposed to turn left? I did try left once before and almost fell over bloo... |
|
I always turn to the right as this sets Caitlyn up for a much larger and smoother turn. If I were to turn to the left, this would put me in a position to fall all over Caitlyn and Caitlyn trying to make a 180 degree turn inside of a foot or two. Turning to the right, Caitlyn is able to make a full rotation in about a 6 foot circle and this is much smoother for her. Either way, congrats on the top three!!!! That had to make you proud of Bloo!! Vance |
Look at this video. These are among four of the best owner/breeder/handlers I know and they all turn to the right. Vance |
I've been watching videos of everyone and most if not all turn right... None of the other judges have commented on it just the one best 3 judge tonight. Im not the only one at ring craft that turns right so do I ignore her or go left? Im so confused argh!!! |
The smart thing is to learn what each judge likes, wants and expects and do it for them in the ring. Yeah, you may feel like you're doing it wrong but if its what gets you the ribbon... Kinda like when I was taking a political science class I college. I knew the instructor was a way out there liberal and I wasn't. In order to get a good grade from him I just gave the answers I knew he'd want to hear. Doesn't mean I agreed or believed it myself... I ended up with a strong A in the class too!! Do what it takes. You are talking about doing the down and back, right? Where you start out by the judge - go down to the diagonal corner, turn around and come straight back to the judge? Then yes, you turn right (away from your dog). It needs to be a quick pivot though, no looping turn. Really tight. I teach and judge Junior showmanship here too - and that is really one of the very few times when it is correct to go between your dog and the judge. |
As Dawn states, a pivot. Marilyn taught me when I go to make this turn, to plant my right foot and swing my left leg around and this will help keep Caitlyn in a nice smooth turn without changing her speed or pace. Once I got this down, Caitlyn and I really did become as one in the turn - it always feels right and good. This also keeps my where I need to be as I come out of the turn so I can keep her in perfect line with the judge's eye. Vance |
