Talk to me again after juniper season has ended. |
Spring? HA! We just received 2-4 inches of snow. And now the cold is about to move in. We're WAYYYY below normal with no relief in sight. |
We are digging out from more snow, drifting snow and cold temps. Will celebrate tho. |
Sadly I just saw our own local weather forecast and we may be looking at unseasonably cold weather for the next week AND a possibility of SNOW on Thursday. Ah don'y you just LOVE the Springtime!!! |
We are full of fresh snow and cold. Only 22 for a high (and that's F, not C ) and the low tonight is supposed to be -5F ....bbboooooo! |
Ok Dawn, BUT isn't that called SPRING in the Northlands? lol |
baileesdad wrote: Ok Dawn, BUT isn't that called SPRING in the Northlands? lol Spring is cold here, but usually a bit more gentle than this!! And no relief in sight, that's the sad part. The forecast for the next 7-10 days is still below freezing for HIGHS. |
I'm a bit of a weather nerd, so I like to look at the data beyond what they give in a forecast. Up in the Greenland area right now, there is what they call a blocking high pressure system. It's high pressure that's cut-off from the jet stream, so it can't move. This causes the northerly branch of the jet to get shunted southeasterly across the northeast of the U.S., funneling all that cold, Canadian air over us. The weather in the northeast won't improve until that blocking high breaks down and the jet takes a more west-to-east track. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the meteorologists are forecasting when that blocking high will break down. If you visit the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center, there are more tools on there to help you understand the weather better beyond what your weatherman gives you. Plus, they have some nice outlook maps. Their website is: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/ Also on the page, is a link to the NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) and AO (Artic Oscillation). I won't try to explain them; they do a good job at that. These 2 phenomenon have a big impact on our weather here in the States, especially the northeast. Simply put, neutral & especially positive values = good weather. Negative values = bad weather. The more positive, the better the weather. The more negative, the worse the weather. Links: NAO: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/p ... /nao.shtml AO: http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/p ... x/ao.shtml Right now, the AO is 5 standard deviations below neutral. That's extremely low. That shows how deep that blocking high up in Greenland is. I like to look at the AO & NAO predictions for an idea of how the weather will be longer term; 2 weeks out, say. |
I just don't get why anyone complains about snow.... I'm already melting from the heat. Summer feels like a punishment every year. |
Coincedentally, one of our best meteorologists published the following article this morning about this Greenland Block and abnormally cold and snowy weather the northeast has been experiencing lately. Go to the following link for this article: http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/ ... er_default |
I was so mentally and physically miserable from the 2012 Summer from Hell that the thought of summer makes me ill. However, it is 12 degrees F right now. I'd like something around 55, sunny, with a gentle breeze. Is that too much to ask? |
I just hope all the snow and ice melts and it's warm for the Sheepdog Shindig in Canada in May! I don't want to be in a parka! Cindy |
I'm a weather nerd too. I always said if I wasn't a nurse, I'd have been a meteorologist! I have been watching the big high block out over Greenland too....It can move anytime now! We need a break from this jet stream pattern here. Our high so far today is 16F, but the windchill still is in the negative numbers. Happy spring here in Minnesota! Sunny for sure, but not very "springlike" here. And no sign of any warming in the next week either. |
One of my best mates is a weather man and a very good one. I think 2012 & 2013 will be the year of odd weather. And happy spring to you all d |
For all you naysayers...ITS THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING! It may be cold, ok downright frigid, but the end is in sight. And speaking of sight, I sighted a Robin today. That is a sure sign! |
It was 70 or so this afternoon, with 74 expected tomorrow. We kinda skipped winter this year. I never wore my heavy coat, just a medium weight sweater on the few "cold days." We need snow and rain. Think of us this summer when the temperature is over 100. Our soil is mostly clay, so it makes it hotter. |
Spring will get here eventually... Until then here is what my reality is: http://instagram.com/p/XFLWXkshPD/ -snapped on my way to work today http://instagram.com/p/XAPQyHshP9/-yesterday, Leonard refused to come inside during a snow storm http://instagram.com/p/WiKMrxMhBY/ ice dams on the roof as seen out my kitchen widow, my husband destroyed them but they were beautiful (if not destructive) Must say winter here is beautiful (as is the picture of my super stubborn snow dog) so I am ok if it hangs on a little while longer! Dogs stay clean. So sunny and bright here. Quite enjoyable (minus the -35 wind chill this morning) |

The icicles or ice dams are quite unique. And I'm with Cindy, snow and cold now, great weather for the shindig |
