I'm of the British cozy murder mystery school, so I love Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh. American cozy authors I like are Mary Daheim, Janet Evanovich (for her Stephanie Plum books, the only books that make me laugh out loud) and Jill Churchill. The scariest book I ever read was Stephen King's "The Shining" although the movie was laughable. What about Dean Koontz? I've heard he's scary. Another kinda scary one is the character Alex Cross (can't remember the author though). |
I don't like scary books or movies. Never have. Prefer police/detective mysteries JA Jance, Lee Child (tho Reacher isn't a policeman), Kathy Reichs, yes, Janet Evanovich (Plum series), JD Robb's "Death" series, Clive Cussler, JA Konrath, and a few even more obscure Steven F. Havill and Jeffrey Siger. With ereaders I can find an obscure author (usually under cheap books) and if I enjoy the story will go after other works. When all else fails I always have G.K. Chesterton........ |
Look up Wayne Cline. I used to work with him up until about six months ago. Great guy with a great mind. http://www.buybooksontheweb.com/product.aspx?ISBN=0-7414-4676-6 I know he's currently working on his second novel. Vance |

Sometimes their first novels are their best, I'll have to look him up. |
Vince Flynn is one of my fav authors. My very favorite auther, Maeve Binchey pasted away this past July and I'm so going to miss her books. They are not mystery books, just nice pleasant books with alot of Irish humor. |
Patricia Cornwell - the Kay Scarpetta series. The books are really well written - she's a medical examimer....if you haven't a strong stomach some parts may be too graphic. The author worked in the ME field, so they are quite authentic and "real". I love them as audio books - make the miles go by fast! |
Vince Flynn and Cornwell are two others, Dale Brown for guy type stories (military). I'm not real particular, just not romance........or scary. Alex Cross....those are Patterson books, got tired of the character. |
Charles Martin! |
Dragonlance authors Wies and Hickman |

I saw Katie Couric interview Patricia Cornwell a few weeks ago and she is a very interesting person. She has the most beautiful eyes. I've not read any of her books yet, but will. If she gets to graphic just jump over a few pages. lol |
We're mostly Audio CD folks but we have either read or listened to all of these. Both of whom are TOTALLLLLLLLLLY are favorites. We look forward to every new one we can get our hands on. Love all the plot twists, always exciting, full of action, murder, mystery... just fantastic!! I hated listening to audios until these two. Lee Child – ALL OF THEM ...but these are the ones we've recently gone through: Echo Burning One Shot Enemy The Affair Killing Floor the hard way tripwire die trying running blind persuader Without Fail ...and these are the Robert Crais ones we have LOVED: Taken Watchman The Last Detective The Forgotten Man Hostage The First Rule Lullaby Town The monkey’s raincoat Sunset Express two minute rule (ryan said he’s read) Indigo Slam Stalking the Angel Voodoo River Chasing Darkness Sentry Like sheepieboss, we like Vince Flynn too. ...both American Assassin and Extreme Measures (we have a huge list that I keep track of on word or else I'd never remeber which ones we have read/listened to) |
I like Tami Hoag, Tess Gerristen & of corse Dean Koontz. |
I like fantasy books. My fave author is corilania funke (I think thats how you spell it...) My fave books have to be the inkheart trilogy |
I love so many authors they're too numerous to mention but a lot of the ones I like are the same as Susan. |
David Baldacchi is a favorite but not his camel club series. Dean Koontz is supernaturally scary in some novels, The Watchers is his first and my fav. The Stephanie Plum series is a scream, when you need a light hearted read. John Sandford, the Prey Series, is superb, especially the first ones. My most recent find is John Verdon, he has three novels that are well plotted. |
I read constantly. I have a lot of "down" time in my job during the winter and usually read three to four books a week. One of my favorite authors is Alexander McCall Smith for his #1 Ladies Detective Series. I love these books, because they are set in Botswana, Africa and I have spent a lot of my airline career in this part of the world and can really relate the the places that are talked about in the books. I also enjoy Kathy Reichs' books. Good mysteries incorporating her background as a forensic anthropologist. I read across many genres and recently read a good dog book called A Dog Named Boo by Lisa J Edwards. I bless my library every day for their incredible collection of e-books I can borrow for my reader. Kathie |
Some of my favourite authors: Gabriel Garcia Marquez Naguib Mahfouz Lawrence Durrell Anne-Marie MacDonald Vikram Seth Rohinton Mistry Michael Ondaatje Amitav Ghosh Hemingway Khaled Hosseini Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Wayne Johnston Gabrielle Roy there are probably many others... genre authors: (Comedy) Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchet (Sci-fi) David Brin (fantasy) Tolkien |
I read multicultural fiction, literary fiction, and mysteries, but lately, it's been all about the mysteries. I like Eliot Pattison's series about Tibetan Monks ("Skull Mantra", "Bone Mountain"), and Colin Cotterill's about a Laotian Coroner in the 1970's (starts with "The Coroner's Lunch"). If you like to mix death and comedy, Lisa Lutz will make you laugh out loud. Her first book, "The Spellman Files" was absolutely hilarious. Another mystery writer with a witty, wry sense of humor is Christopher Brookmyre, a Scottish author. He writes his dialogue phonetically, which is a hoot. All of these authors have written multiple novels, so I would start with the first book of each series. Last, but not least, I would recommend Henning Mankell. His police procedurals are set in Sweden, with the main character, Kurt Wallander. I believe that the BBC has started turning his books into movies recently, but I haven't seen any of them. I started reading him over ten years ago, when someone decided to translate his books from Swedish into English, but, fair warning, I don't think they were translated in sequential order. Laurie and Oscar |
Isabelle Allende and Pearl Buck.... I reread some of their books every few years. |
Anyone who loves dogs must read "The Art of Racing in the Rain" by Garth Stein. |
BlooBoo wrote: I like fantasy books. My fave author is corilania funke (I think thats how you spell it...) My fave books have to be the inkheart trilogy My favorites are fantasy too. If you're up for a long and detailed but fantastically written series that isn't finished yet, you have to read Janny Wurts. She has a couple of stand alone books, at least one finished trilogy and a mega epic that is still going that is the best fantasy I've EVER read and I've been reading fantasy for over two decades. Stephen Donaldson is also great but a challenging read. |
Lisa Gardner "the Neighbor" was good. I always read John Sandford Prey novels. The earliest ones are best IMO, but I'm so hooked on the main character, I have to read it. Good marketing Scare the pants off novels are by William Diehl. (something )Terror and its follow up, Reign in Hell are unforgettable(except for the title ), has a gotcha grab. Also, Greg Iles writes some twisted psychologically frightening books. Great post, I like to update my authors. |
Alastair Reynolds is my current top Author. (Sci-Fi) |
