Is this normal new pup behavior?

Please advise! Our new 8 wk old pup oes Comet just came to his new home this week. It's been many years since our last oes was a pup (he recently passed at 12+ yrs). Additionally, our last oes was a very calm gentle boy. The new pup has shown what seems to me are signs of aggression but I am not 100% sure. He loves to romp around and chew as was fully expected, but he also will just lunge towards our family members (all adults) and bite hard while growling at the same time. His growl sounds pretty aggressive rather than playful. He has done this during outdoor play time as well as indoors unexpectedly. Because our last oes was soooo very gentle, it's hard to determine if this is normal. Is it too soon to even determine this being he's still only 8-9 weeks? Any advice is appreciated!

:yay: :yay: Congratulations on your new puppy!!! :clappurple: :clappurple:
I'll say it first, we need a picture :wag:

Comet sounds like a normal puppy to me, exploring the new environment and boundaries. Charm was very vocal after finding her "voice" and lunged at us from under tables, around corners, etc. We acquainted it to pouncing, and she still does that when very excited in play.

As far as biting, stick a toy in Comet's mouth every time he opens it toward you. Any skin contact, and I let out the loudest yelp possible, and all play ended. Doesn't take long for them to understand, but they forget, and it needs reinforced from everyone, every time. My DH was always making excuses for her, and he always had more teeth marks

Also, search "new puppy" and you will find a wealth of information from very experienced people here on most puppy questions.

Comet sounds like a spirited pup, full of himself. With training and guidance, he will settle down into the gentleness that you remember as well as his own special personality. Charm is two years old, and is still a youngster in so many ways.

Welcome, please let us know how Comet progresses. And don't forget the pictures

Thank you Brenda for reading and replying!

Sorry no pics posted yet. Have to figure out how to post on here-just found this site yesterday and have found some useful info. Thanks for the links, I will surely read them.

Glad to hear its probably normal puppy behavior. Today we seem to be doing a bit better (at least through lunchtime!) and hopefully that is a sign of good things to come. Comet does enjoy chewing his toys very much and we have been doing just as you advised with sticking a toy in his mouth every time he gets hold of something he should not have like furniture, cabinets, etc.. As far as chewing us, we immediately pull away and loudly shout no. I will take your advice about immediately ending all play and see if we have some success. Sounds like Charm responded well to your method.
Thanks for the reminder that it will get easier!
You will find excellent advice in many of these threads. Many very wonderful and experienced people help to make this forum the best OES source on the web. Happy reading, and be sure to let us know how Comet is progressing.
All puppies do that. Have you ever watched and listened to a litter??
They growl and pounce and play. If one bites too hard, the "victim" would yelp...

This is the link to another part of the forum I found helpful in learning how to post pictures.

So all day today went very well, til now. Comet latched on biting only clothing fortunately but WOULD NOT let go. Dawn, I am familiar with the pouncing and playing and growling, but the latching on where you cannot physically pry him off for a few seconds is new to me. This is where I am concerned....
He needs a job. 8) What do you intend to do with him to keep him gainfully employed instead of being a pain in the butt? ;-)

And Dawn's exactly right. I wish more people had the opportunity to watch litters at play over the weeks as they develop. That way their puppies wouldn't seem like such scary little aliens when they bring them home. They are absolute HORRORS to each other    But it serves a purpose - it's how they learn.

Kristine
Hi Kristine, as you and Dawn advised, I just watched some videos of littermates playing, which never occurred to me to do before. I wish more people would recommend doing that before hand as you said. Good advice! It makes things "a little" less scary....

Comet has full-time stay at home people, so lots of exercise and play is on the agenda, and has been thus far. I guess my screams will have to become EVEN LOUDER when he does latch on, and once I can pry him off, I'll immediately cease all play. At least today it was only one latch on incident, which is an improvement. Wish us well!
