He had been on ABX for a tooth abscess, and this was the follow-up appt. to pull teeth and clean them. I dropped him off before 8am yesterday. He passed his senior blood profile (the lucky boy - even on RX pain meds, he still has all normal values.) About 11:30 I get a call from Troy (my vet) saying he had at least 3 teeth in a row up there that were infected and cross contaminating each other, so he would need to pull them all . Those were in the upper left side - premolars and molars. That he also had several loose incisors in the lower front needing removal. He also has a condition in his gums similar to periodontal disease, where the gums loosen and trap food and bacteria. At 1:30 they called and said he was all done and ready to go home! He ended up loosing 7 teeth total - 2 molars, 2 premolars and 3 incisors. He has sutures that will dissolve. He needs to continue his Clindamycin (ABX) until gone, and will be on his daily Vetprofen (canine NSAID) for pain. If he needs more pain meds, I am just to let them know. They said he was his usual happy hound self, wanting pets and wagging his tail. He and the other dogs (vet clients and boarder dogs) were chatting and they heard Harley adding his bit of howling with them. When the tech brought him out, he was as prancing as a basset could be, tail wagging...such a sweet old boy! He went out to the car, and was able to do his usual JUMP into the back seat (floor) of the Element. Here he is on our ride home: At about 6pm he ate some of his soaked dog food (we've been soaking his food the last year - because of the gum issue), and took his pain med for Todd. When I got home from class, he was lined up with the rest of them to get his supper! This morning he seems not bothered at all - checking his face he actually has minimal swelling. Right now he's in his usual spot on the couch. I can see he's dreaming, his stubby feet are twitching! I was concerned with his age (15) and anesthesia, but happily he made it through just fine and is on his road to recovery. |

YEA Harley!! A tough old boy who now feels better without the tooth, teeth aches. Maybe a bit toothless but doesn't interfere with his bassie howl. He can still sing! |
15 years old & still going strong. God bless him! |
Good boy Harley, now you have age and sparkling teeth on your side. Keep going strong Harley |
What a trooper!!! He seemed to handle is doctor's visit better than me!!! Vance |
You go Harley! Such a handsome old man! |
That is such great news that Harley made it through and will probably feel 100% better than he has in years! It's amazing how our seniors can't be stopped. Violet is bouncing back as well. |
Glad to hear he's done so well! Luna had to have a tooth removed recently; apparently it had chipped, exposing the nerve, and we had no idea it had happened. I think of Luna, or Harley walking around in that sort of tooth pain for how long? Its no wonder they are all wags and smiles when those teeth come out! It must be a great relief for them, physically! |
Good boy Harley!!! I know you will feel much better soon |
Thanks for all your good wishes!!! They must be working, as his recovery is going amazingly smooth and uneventful. Good appetite, happy hound, very little swelling. Right now he's laying just to the left of me, curled up in front of the corn/pellet stove. |
Good boy, Harley! Once his gums heal up, he's going to feel so much better! Extra pets are definitely deserved. |
Yeah Harley! What a tough guy! |
Great news Harley! Get better fast! Cindy |
Harley and Chewie, from last night. Chewie pretty much "adopted" Harley when he came to our family 3 years ago. They always spent time together. In fact Harley sleeps out on the colder porch at night, just to be close to Chewie....that is true dedication!! It's not the best quality picture, but I was getting it with my phone while Harley wasn't looking. He's scared of cameras, poor guy. His recovery continues well, thanks so much for all your positive thoughts!!! |
Good for Harley! Glad to hear good news |
