Dog Park - Need Your Ideas

Two years ago, the group of folks I work with built a small dog park for our local humane society as a team building project. We designed and built two connected runs, a shelter and secure area to get the dogs off/on leash. We used artificial turf on the ground and it has held up really, really well.

This year, we're hoping to repeat the project with another non-profit shelter nearby. However, this is a much larger area and we're not sure our budget will allow us to put down artificial turf, which as you may imagine, is quite expensive.

I've been brainstorming, but figured I should ask the experts. :D My question, to those of you who visit various dog parks, is what materials, other than artificial turf, have you seen used that hold up well? I want to research some other options in case we have trouble raising funds.

Thanks for taking time to share your thoughts & suggestions!

Try and get some builders and stores to help with your project. You will get a lot of free help
In a large, LARGE area, more than 2 acres, grass will hold up....if the design gets the people from congregating in one area...near the gate. If you can get them to use several gates, separate the human area, the dogs won't congregate. If there is a concentrated area.....say physical structures for the dogs to climb on, then sand or other inert material. Shade is important, for uprights and dogs. That should have paving underneath. Small dogs need a small dog area.

Best wishes for getting the new facility :crossed:
Our dog park has mulch/wood chips on the paths and it helps keep the mud down and wet. It is good for high traffic areas where the grass just can't take the traffic. Our city gives it away for free after people shred their Christmas tree. It's also soft to walk on and if the dogs dog it's easy to fill in holes.
I hesitated about bark mulch, ours use it too, but seems to be a tick habitat, at least here.
Ahh, with our extreme climate we only really have ticks for a couple months a year and our usually hide in the grass/bush. Our park is frozen for half the year so maybe it isn't the best prototype :)
Our local dog park, and my own dog yard, have wood mulch in them. No tick or parasite problems here either from it. Again, we have a cold climate, so maybe that is what saves us??

The dog park gets loads of it from the wood crews - they need a place to dispose of it anyway. Doesn't cost them anything. Just the city workers wages to help spread it a bit.
The park I know the best is wood mulch. Just too much traffic for grass. Disposing of woody waste is a big problem for arborists and cities so having this outlet is great. Here a composting company will take a lot of the chips, but it becomes a matter of transport.......they are aways away so the city and private contractors prefer to use closer to collection site when possible. In fact when we had tree take downs here last summer we asked for the chips but were told they were under contract to take to the composting site.....I guess I'll get my chips back in a more composted form later.
Thank you all for your suggestions. :D  It looks like we are going to end up with a combination of materials. I was able to find a company to give us a huge discount on the artificial turf. So, we'll be able to use that for the majority of the space. Then, we'll use crushed stone for the walking trail and mulch in some of the natural areas. It's going to be a big help for this shelter that's doing such good work. They currently have only two small concrete fenced areas where dogs can exercise. Fortunately, though, they are blessed with a host of volunteers who take the dogs on extended walks daily. :phew:
Sounds like it'll be nice Tammy.
Every dog needs a park! Even if it is frozen! Glad to hear you got a discount... It sounds like a great cause.

Here is what our dog park is like right now:
