I'm pretty anal about this and the only thing that works 'for me' is... trimming the beard short and/OR ...wiping their mouth with a paper towel or towel after EVERY single meal and water drinking.

We've done this since our dog was a pup... every single time she drinks water... and I don't have any problems or extra cleaning to do. This means she doesn't get water 'whenever' though which is the downfall. She walks to her bowl when she wants water (learned... not at first) ...and she also has gotten so used to the routine, she walks to us when she's done because she clearly knows she has to get her mouth dried. She just stands there and follow us around until we wipe it. haha ........before she hated it. Now she's accepted it ;)

I used to keep whitening shampoo on me, but we find no need for it anymore.
Getting slobber off quickly helps as it has proteins in it that stain reddish. I've hear Milk of Magnesia rubbed into the beard and back out helps. Also whitening shampoo like Mrs. J said.
I must be truly blessed as out little Caity almost always has a nice white muzzle. Yeah, occasionally it'll show a little yellow, but I think I'd rather have a tinge of yellow then brown, black or muck!!! When I wash her whites, I use Clarol Shimmer Lights and I've never been let down - that stuff rocks!!!

Laika always keeps hers clean herself my angel. She rubs it usually on her bed or right now runs outside and rubs it in the snow. My dirty boy doesn't care and he is so sloppy when he drinks sometimes he even forgets to close his mouth and it just pours out. I like to take a facecloth and wipe. When he sees me coming his head goes down and he slinks away. I should get that on video every time he sees me holding a face cloth head goes down.

You can see the difference too.

Wow I admire your dedication. :)
They do somewhat outgrow it, thank goodness.
If you aren't showing, you can keep the under chin hair trimmed a little shorter - that helps. If you trim too much though, it will make them look snipey jawed! Not a good look at all.

Wiping after drinks helps. Anytime I'm around and Bond drinks, I wipe with an old hand towel. More of a squeeze and blot than actual wiping. Chewie has outgrown the slurpy drinking, so it's mostly Bond ;)

When Chewie was young, I trained him to stand at the edge of the bathtub - facing it. Then I washed his face and dried it. Worked great, so I taught Bond the same thing. Because they need to be immaculate before therapy dog visits, and also because I never take them out looking anything but clean - we do it almost daily. I teach classes 2-3 nights a week, and they really need to look presentable. I'm anal about it anyway, but also feel I need to set a certain standard for my students in regard to taking care of my own dogs :)

I also use a generic Tums product - it is supposed to slightly change the pH of the body fluids and not cause that reddish staining. They get 1 a day with their breakfast - they like the fruit flavors the best!
Thanks for replies appreciated, only I live in the UK and wondered if any products are available here ?
Thanks,
Susan
I called my breeder after I tried all kinds of stuff that didn't work. She told me she used
Angels Eyes Dog Tear Stain Remover. Wiley didn't have any tear stains, but I started giving it to him and it worked! We use the sweet potato flavor. Best price I've found is at Valuepetsupplies.com. He gets 1/2 teaspoon mixed in with his food twice a day. (The photo used in my avatar was taken before we started using it).
I would say lisaoes is the best person on this. She works magic with here dogs.

one day I will devulge my secret, in the meantime, babs and Syd with there pristine white beards.

Brie there mummy with hers :P

Do you see what I mean. I am sure she was in bewitched. Magic is what she uses & they look very good. With the little amount of time I have been showing I would say she is the best. No one comes close
For actually cleaning (not whitening) a bit of dilute washing up liquid (Fairy) in a squirty bottle helps.

I have done/do the same "mouth bath" as Dawn. I use Chris Christensen's "White on White" shampoo (and do not even wait the time it says on the bottle). It works great.

Yet if they need a quick clean up before showing, a light spray of "Grooming Aid" by Absolutely Natural works great. It has enzymes that dissolve saliva stains. Using less is better. http://www.absolutelynatural.com/ It works on whites with urine stains too. Over time it will not turn the whites grey or pink, as some other self-rinse shampoos will.
