So now I get to be the mean mommy and she is going on a diet no matter what her daddy says. His theory is "dogs don't live forever so why not give them treats" It is like trying to get him to understand. So my question is what kind of ratio to kibble should I use or just go total green beans which doesn't seem right. She is not a great fan of the beans so I have been mixing in a little greek yogurt (good protein and filling) to make them a little more tasty. |

Start with just a tablespoon in place of an equal part of food. Expect her to ignore them initially. You can use chicken stock or yogurt to encourage the slimey green things to be eated. Just not bacon fat Gradually build up to where she gets half kibble/half greenbeans. Glacier lost a lot of weight on the GB diet, about 70 lbs. She would only eat canned no salt GBs, not fresh, not frozen. She preferred the cut, not french cut. Each dog is different. If green beans don't work, try cooked carrots. In fact I make it a point to teach my dogs to eat vegetables early on. Sam and Jack were big on broccoli, none of the others would eat crucifers. Carrots have always been popular along with squash, both winter and summer. No garlic, no onions. I also avoid corn for possible allergies. Peas......only Jack went for those, of course. |
Yep - like Susan said. The green bean diet gets used a lot with Bassets, they are usually easy keepers and they attract humans who don't think they ever need exercise. |
Tell Daddy for every extra treat given HE has to walk Bella at least an hour. It will do them both good. |

Treats are used only for training, as rewards. If you do want to use them randomly, (without the dog earning them), they need to be accounted for in their 24 hour diet. I have many friends who use their dog's kibble as training treats - and after training, whatever amount is left over is given as actual food in their bowl. I'm not that dedicated, but I do take it into account and remove a little food if we used lots of treats for something earlier. But often whatever was being treated was a physical activity, so they cancel each other out. Also a very important thing is to actually measure your dog's food. My scoop is a measuring cup - so when we need to increase or decrease a dog's food, it's done accurately. |
When I put my two on the Green bean diet, I only used it for one meal, dinner. They had regular food for breakfast and than half and half for dinner. My boys LOVE green beans. Dh thought they loved it more slightly warm and would put it in the microwave before giving it to them We increased our walks and "they" lost 20lbs. Me? Nothing. |
