bath time

I know people have told me lots and lots but I want to make sure.

Crufts is on a sunday. When shall I bath bloos white and grey. Shall I bath grey one day and white another or all in one go?

I was going to bath him all on the friday night but maybe thats a little close. Its going to be so hard keeping him clean :P

Thanks x

Caity gets a full bath a week out (today would work) and then a 'whites-only' the day before the show. And then we treat her like royalty up until the end of all the show activities to keep her clean. When I say this, I mean booties for ALL outside activities which is ONLY potty breaks. She gets NO outdoor playtime before or during the show weekend. Yeah, we play like there's no tomorrow inside. After all/any food or water her face gets a wipe down and cleaned as needed. In my opinion, this maintenance is really the hardest part of the show grooming as it really take attention, diligence and patience.

Good luck Sam!!! We'll all be screaming for you! And all the other Sheepies as well. We all want a Sheepie to be the last dog standing!!

If the whole dog is due a bath, I do it at LEAST 1 week, prefer 2 weeks or more, before the show.
Then just whites the day before. :)
I think Bond had his last full bath back in September, maybe end of August.
Before his shows in January, he just got whites done. OK, I wash whites a lot - we do stuff, he gets dirty, he gets them washed. I always keep him brushed out, so if he ever needs a bath, he can be popped right in...I'm kind of obsessed, I guess! ;)
Only the white bits as it makes the coat soft and don't do the top of his head. Dirty face is a yes feet and bum area. Coat needs to stand when fluffed up.

I only wash the whites bits on Esher ie.face, front legs I check her lady bits are ok . Lincoln beening the boy he is gets his face ,legs and his man bits washed too .

:wag: :wag: :wag:
Yes what Val has said
So I don't have to wash the grey at all?. Just the white but not the head.

Surely if I get his tummy legs and private wet the grey will get wet too....bloo has got loads of dandruff because hes not been bathed for months, surely he has to be all clean? His skin will get itchy else.

Thanms for the tips xx

Grooming all though the coat from skin should of got any lose skin/dandruff/dirt out,
if Bloo has got dandruff maybe putting a little oil over his dinner IE:olive/sunflower/ this will help with the itchy,
Now do Not bath just before Crufts ,this is very inportent as it will soften Bloo's coat then you would NOT be able to do a thing with his coat, it should be corse, you only need to bath/wash what we have replyed ,
Trust us we Have done the bathing and had the coats tooooooooooo soft just before a champ/Crufts show. WE have learnt by our mistakes.
Once Crufts is over then give Bloo a full bath
I was going to bath him tomorrow but I will trust you and leave it.
Eurgh hes going to stink so bad :P

I brush him everyday which I know I shouldn't but he gets knots and matts every time we go out for a walk-i think due to the cold and damp. You cant put your fingers through the coat without hitting a knot...I know you shouldn't take out the undercoat but thats what keeps matting up. Im trying to keep it all in by using the bristle brush instead of the comb but it doesn't get the matts out I have to comb them through :(
Hes going through the coat change and its driving me insane! !!!

I can't believe how much ive learnt just from 3 shows. I can't thank everyone enough :ghug:
Sam once he has a full coat it will make life easy. It's harder to groom a sheepdog via puppy cut and growing back as well of the junior coat. The more we practice the better we get. Sheepie might get fed up

Hi Sam

Trust me - DO NOT BATHE all of Bloo. Just do the paws, underbelly and little man if needed, oh and the face and beard but not the head nor ears. If ears are yucky use ear wipes

You need to keep the undercoat in otherwise he will have no coat and there will be nothing for you to brush up into a ball. You should tease the knots out. Have you purchased Coat Handler, this will help with the knots? If you havent then a good suggestion would be to go to Pet etc and buy the coat handler at Crufts. Yes it is expensive but believe me it does the job!!

His coat should be settled down by now. I think you are using the wrong brush - you need to use the pin brush without the bobbles on or the wide tooth comb. I am concerned that he is getting so matted just by going for a walk as this does not normally happen unless of course one has not groomed.

Hopefully your passes for Crufts have arrived. I realise I never replied to your email about taking chairs, sorry, things have been hectic. In answer to your question, leave the chairs at home as there will not be any room for them and there should be available chairs around the ring. The area around your bench is rather small and if you are taking grooming stuff, table, food etc then you really dont want to add the chairs. Your poor arms will be so long with all the stuff plus Bloo. Dont forget the car park is miles and miles away from the venue.

Remember to enjoy the day - it is a stressful one, but it should be an enjoyable one too.

Just a word of warning - dont stoke a dog once they have been groomed ready for the show ring as you will probably get shot!! I remember a child touching the head of a well known champion and the breeder/owner nearly killed the mother and the child. As this happened moments before going in the ring, presentation is a must.

I have thought lately that for our own OES specialties, we should have a full coated dog there that is NOT being shown that people can touch, especially the kids. I remember my first show how hard it was to keep my hands to myself!

Ok thanks. I have a poodle comb, many detangle tools (me and mom took a drive up to pet cetera last week) but I don't have a pin brush with out knobbles.
I groom him every day theres absolutely no matts what so ever on him, but I can take him out come back and it feels damp and knotted. Either that or its just cold and im getting paranoid...
Im trying to keep as much coat in as possible. I'm trying my best.
Im really proud of myself for keeping on top of the coat, usually id have given ip by now but I am determined! :D
Ok we will leave chairs, we are taking one of those bag on wheels might be easier. Luckily my dads coming so he can carry it all haha.
:/ omg id never stroke anyone else's dog! Im too young to die...

Hopefully I won't have anymore questions to ask before crufts so id like to thank you all soooooooo much. I would be in a right mess with out your help.
See youll at crufts!!!
I will have to shop around see what I can find.

Im probably doing lots of things wrong but im still learning, I don't have any sheepie friends by me besides you all here kn the internet. So I have to do all this grooming alone :(
I live around 2 minutes walk from Dezynadog here in Kings Lynn who will have a big stand at Crufts. They will have anything you need for grooming that you don't already have! Good Luck!
Sam as you will be hanging out with lots of oes at crufts and I am sure by now through this forum and facebook you know lots of them. Ask for a look through their kit so why your there you can get any bits n Bob's.
a few good stalls are petcetera, Christine's direct, Simpson's, redcape and of course dezynadog who I would live to live around the corner from! Go on crufts website and look through the stalls, it will give you an idea if where everything is because you can wonder all day
Imogen is competing for young groomer of the year at 8.15 so when she's finished we will come n find you all, armed with my trusty shopping trolley and empty purse.
good luck Sam x

Hi Sam

We are always learning no matter what the topic is or how long we have been learning/sharing experiences.

Grooming is a huge task and one I loathe to distraction and with three OES its a never ending task. Thankfully Tia is in a puppy cut, so thats no so bad!

You've had a nosey through Parwaz and our grooming bags - as a starter, I would suggest a pin brush (Doreen Paige do a reasonably cheap one), Mason and Pearson (Expensive I know), a rake that retracts, a wooden wide tooth comb and coat handler. All you can buy online or at Crufts, I would personally have a look at these items at Crufts and then buy online as you will save heaps. I know you've had a bad experience, but still give it a whirl

Not sure if the poodle comb is the comb I am thinking off - as you probably have seen there are lots and lots of brushes and combs around.

See you there - dont forget the boots for Bloo as the tunnel can be awful...
Theres a tunnel!?!?!
Im going to get so lost on the car parks :P Are there numbers outside telling you which hall is what? ill just follow others lol
Oh yeah the tunnel...yuk
If you head for the main door then you will be sent to where you should be. Keep your paperwork to hand as you cant even take your dog for a wee without it
