Three days later I was going to a quick doctors appointment and figured I would leave the dogs out of the kitchen. Leonard never chews anything and I only leave them in the kitchen when I am leaving for the full day. I was confident putting them in the kitchen was overkill. I returned about an hour later and opened the door to the WORST smell ever. It smelled like metal and vomit. I went upstairs and was greeted by my dogs and looked around to see where the smell was coming from. That's when I saw it... Piles of puke all over my expensive but super comfortable cream microfiber sectional that we spent months picking out. No! In the pile was you guessed it... An entire metal scrubber which had likely been in whichever dog's stomach for 3days. I am pretty confident it was Leonard because he is the only one who is tall enough to steal things from the sink (which is something he has done before) his beard also smelled like the couch. First I was freaked out about Leonard's health. I called the vet and they said if it wasn't in pieces (it was in a big clump) and it didn't have any chemical coatings (it was a plain stainless steel scrubber with no coating) he would likely be fine. It's been 5 days and he is fine. My couch is not so lucky. I have got the stain out easily. I have washed the couch 11 times now trying to get the terrible smell out. I am usually the queen of cleaning remedies and pride myself on being able to clean everything. I have tried the following with little success: -diluted ammonia several times -dish soap -vinegar (helped a bit but smells strong itself) -odor neutralizer spray -natural enzyme cleaners -the heavy duty odor eliminator we use on my husbands hockey equipment. NOTHING HAS HELPED... I want to try baking soda but I am worried about affecting the colour of the couch. Does anybody have any ideas? I don't have a wet vac, any suggestions to get the smell out? My efforts have lessened the smell but I need to get rid of it ASAP! |

OMG, I don't really have any solutions to offer other than Febreze. This is why we buy leather! Hope you are able to salvage it. So sorry for the couch, but thankful the pupper is oK. |
Glad he is ok! As for your couch, maybe call a professional who can deep clean it? It seems like you have tried most of the usual ways! |
It might be in the foam so a lot of febreze and it will do. Dry is with a hair dryer. I did laugh to myself (no in a bad way as he could of been ill) as Leonard is a bit of a scrubber now. Back to your point & it will go over time & you might have to put a throw over it for a while |
I forgot to add your dogs always put a smile on my face. Two monkeys |
I know it's a different make up, but my 2 got skunked last spring. Before figuring it out they rubbed all over our new microfiber couch. Dish soap baking soda and white vinegar. Saturate the spot. It took 2 applications for me and deskunker. Eventually when it dried it was gone. Look up the correct proportions on line. Good luck Lisa Frankie and Mattie |
Im glad the pups are ok!!! As for your couch....microfiber sucks up EVERYTHING. I had one, I switched to leather and gave away the microfiber. I had no success with keeping my microfiber couch clean. With 3 dogs and 1 being an extremely heavy shedder (gsd/husky/wolf/ ) it never stayed clean, it didn't matter how hard i tried. It drove me insane. |

Is there a zipper so that you can remove the cushion from the cover? I'd try that first to see if the cushion is retaining the odor. If you can't get the smell out of the cushion first nothing is going to work -- you could clean the cover and buy (a) new piece(s) of foam. Glad the dogs are both OK! |
Happy your dogs are healthy! Guest wrote: Good Luck with couch and the Vodka-Wash! Could be the party of the year.....lol. |

One company locally deals with fire restoration, so maybe look for someone like that. Odo-ban is available at Sams warehouse, but don't know if you have it in Canada. Lucky Leonard is my thought! |
Parwaz wrote: I forgot to add your dogs always put a smile on my face. Two monkeys Thanks! I love them because they can always cheer me up even when I am having the worst day! They are pretty hilarious but they don't know it, which makes it even funnier. Especially when Leonard tries to steal the dishwasher, or prances me with something stolen and doesn't think we will notice. Too funny! |
First, I am curious as to how they pupper got the scrub brush out of the sink? My sink is so deep, I can't imagine my dogs getting into it! Are you sure it wasn't a brillo pad or something from under the sink with the sink cabinet left open or something? Just saying so you can protect against it happening again. The couch....how about a slip cover that you can then take off and wash when necessary? We learned with two dogs without a slip cover, our couch would be a disaster...We have a cover on it at all times. Sorry about the couch but glad the dog is okay! |
It was a Norwex scrubber and I only had one which was in a little suction basket thingy at the bottom of the sink. I have witnessed him get up on the counter and steal things from the sink. We can't leave anything in there, he will even steal water glasses and drop them on the floor. I think it's a ploy to get us to open the dishwasher more often. He is getting better at not stealing things from the sink/counters/ottoman/dining table the older he gets. He seems to become less impulsive as the days go by. That being said he will sometimes take things to play with and we will have to "trade" for a safe toy or a marrow bone to chew on. I do think I will need to make some sort of cover as the cushions and their covers are not removable which looking back is really dumb. I really really love the couch though, it is so comfortable and really easy to clean (usually). The trick to cleaning light covered microfibres is cleaning first with diluted ammonia and then when it dries misting it with rubbing alcohol and using a brush to fluff up the Fibers. Makes the couch like brand new... Except for the puke smell that is. Yuck. We usually have a denim quilt around for when the dogs are up on the couch. The baking soda dish soap helped. Somebody told me febreeze for Pete is pretty amazing too. Remains to be seen! Thanks for the ideas, I am debating renting a machine to finish the job |
I was going to add in baking soda too. I would slit one of the cushion covers along a seam and get the foam out - you can restitch it up later. I've had to take my cushions outside and spray them down with stuff and and then let them bake in the sun all day...of course not practical in the middle of winter! But they will air out that way, even in the winter. I lean mine up on one of our metal deck set chairs, so the sun bakes them and the air circulates all around and through them. Our culprit is the wetting grandkids, going thru potty training and peeing during naps.... Thank goodness I have zippers on my couch cushions...saves a lot of hassle. |
