Hi, I went through major ear infections with one of my sheepies. After almost two years of not getting anywhere with my regular vet and Oscar being miserable, I went to a dermatology vet. She explained that many ongoing ear infections (yeast and staph) are related to protein allergies not grain allergies. She immediately switched Oscar to an "unusual" protein source, in his case was rabbit ( which I really didn't like, because I have a pet rabbit), but within a month of being on the new food and treating the ear infections they were completely cleared up. About six month later I was having a major problem locating the rabbit based food (it became to expensive for the company to source rabbits). He was switched to a kangaroo based protein. It has been over a year now since we started these new diets there have been no more ear infections and his rusty legs are now all white again. As far as treats go he is allowed apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, rabbit and kangaroo.. I slice and dry the sweat potatoes in my convection oven on a lightly greased cookie sheet for 8 hours at 170 degrees. Apples and the sweet potatoes are his favorites. You need to be a good label reader, because many product that say they are rabbit or sweet potato have another protein further down the ingredient list and this will just allow the allergies to continue. Good luck. This is a very frustrating situation, but I can tell you Oscar's is now completely resolved. Kathie |
Thank you for the info Kathie. Where did you locate the rabbit or kangaroo dog food? I live in the Newport RI area not too far from you. The food I am giving them now Rachael Ray Just 6, has only 6 ingredients, New Zealand lamb but with brown rice. I always read labels and look for hidden ingredients. The sweet potatoes sound good. I am sure they will like it. My big guy likes fresh pineapple but Lilly does not. |
Hi, I am feeding California Natural Kangaroo and Red Lentil formula to Oscar. I get it from Pet Pantry Warehouse by me. You can also get it from Wag.com. Be warned, this food is expensive, around $70.00 for a 30lb bag, but I figure what I am saving in vet bills treating his ears more than justifies the cost! Royal Canin Vet Diets was making the rabbit food he was originally on, but they are no longer producing the food to my knowledge. By the way, California Natural has a frequent buyer program. You need to ask your supplier for the forms. For every ten bags you buy you get a free bag. Kathie |
