Terribly sorry to hear about your sisters little girl. I lost my boy Oliver to this at 10 years old. By the time he displayed any signs of distress, it was to late to help. My vet told me there was very little that could be done to arrest it had it been caught earlier. The more I read the more I became convinced that this cancer is brought on by environment. It prompted me to stop using chemicals to clean the floors, my yard is treated organically, and all pet food is holistic. I can't wrap my Sheepies in plastic, but I can make everything on their level a little safer. |
I lost my Gracie to this as well, 6/20/11. Gracie was 8 1/2. From the time she was diagnosed, 2 hours later she passed away at home. I still miss her terribly I am sorry to hear your sister and her little girl are going thru this. My vet also said nothing could be done. |
I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. I've been trying to do some research and there seems to be some luck with trying a different diet. Has anyone had any success with surgery? Or Chemo? Did anyone have their dogs spleen rupture? Patch's spleen hasn't ruptured yet so I'm wondering if she has more of a chance for prolonging her life or are we just wishing for something that won't happen... |
my first sheepie, Charly Lou, was 11 1/2 when I noticed her chest was red and hard. Took her to the vet that same day and they said it was cancer. We did chemo for 2 weeks but I think it just prolonged it. Her spleen ruptured and we had to put her down. So sorry about your baby, enjoy every second you have left. |
Just wanted to send in an update on Patch. My sister got a second opinion and then met with an oncologist who recommended surgery. They ended up doing the surgery and on Thursday they removed a 12lb mass from Patch's spleen. We will know next week if it was cancerous but they believe that if it was it would have ruptured by now. Patch is recovering nicely and went home today to be with my sister and her husband. Please send some good doggie prayers/vibes her way. We want her around for a lot longer! |
That's really encouraging! I hope things continue positively for Patch! |
My hopes for a good recover and that she can stay with you a lot longer! |
Wow, that's some positive news. Fingers & paws crossed that she has an uneventful recovery and can be with your sister's family for many more years. |
That is wonderful news and a reminder to all of us that sometimes we should get a second opinion. I hope that she recovers well and lives many more long and healthy years. |
Thank you everyone for your responses-you made my day! |
Hope she gets better as well |
I just hung up the phone with my sister and GREAT NEWS - Patch DOESN'T HAVE CANCER!!!! It was a 12lb. benign hematoma. We are all so so happy. So the morale of the story is to get a second opinion when it comes to something like this. 1 1/2 weeks ago my sister was told by her vet that Patch had HSA. They gave her steroids and told her to take her home, make her comfortable - she lived a good life. A 2nd opinion with another vet, a trip to the Oncologist, surgery to remove the mass and Patch is healthy happy 10 1/2 year old dog. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes! |
AWESOME news!! |
That is wonderful!!! I've had 2 dogs with non-malignant tumors - and one with a benign malignancy (Quite the oxymoron, but it's a malignant tumor that when removed is totally cured). |
Wow, that is fantastic news!! |
