We are doing grooming at college and part of it is that we have to empty out a dogs anal glands. Do you have to empty dogs anal glands? It's so gross.

Washes and washes them tell me they are bothering her. Simon does the same thing, or seems to grab at his back end when his are bothersome.
All dogs have anal glands, and they should empty by themselves.
Some dogs, due to lack of roughage in their diet or bad hereditary luck, have ones that don't empty or only partially do.
I have had dogs for my entire life, and never had a dog who needed them done manually.
There is the belief that doing them manually can lead to problems down the road, if it is just done by a groomer, etc who thinks it should be done ....and also because it's something they can charge their clients for. :?
There is stuff in them all the time, so they can be emptied and an unsuspecting dog owner can be made to feel that it needs to be done and they are not doing something for their dog that they should be doing.
I'm with Dawn on this, never done it as I've tried to keep the dogs' diets roughage enriched. Anal glands do not need to be cleaned normally. I disagree with groomers doing this as a routine matter. Indeed frequent forced expression may lead to problems.

Quote:
Every dog has two small glands located on either side of its rectal opening. Each gland holds a small amount of a brown, noxious-smelling liquid substance. Whenever your dog urinates or defecates, these glands receive a small amount of pressure that releases a tiny bit of the fluid along with your dog's custom-blended scent.

Your dog can also express a little of his personal essence when he meets a fellow canine. Have you ever noticed how two dogs raise their tails on high alert when they first meet? This action applies pressure to the anal glands, and this leads to the traditional butt sniffing humans cannot seem to fathom. However, this greeting is as normal to dogs as shaking hands is to people. Sniffing helps the dogs learn to identify each other by their scents.

Ditto what several people have said. I've had dogs my whole life and have several at a time, I've never had one who needed it done. It should not be done unless a vet deems it necessary, even then I would lean toward diet changes, not having them done.

Yes, let the vet make that call. It's messy, smelly, and trying to express glands that don't need it just cause pain and discomfort for your dog.
We have to do it as part of the semester. Its disgusting.

I've never done bloos either. Im not going to unless something bothers him, but even then I'd let the vet do it lol
ICK! Yes, Annie had problems with this until Foz came to live with us (weird coincidence?). Foz has a lot of problems with this and gets them emptied about every othe rmonth although it seems to have gotten better with this Great Life Bison food. My husband watched them do it once and said NO WAY!
Our basset, Tripper, had to have his cleaned, we always went to the vet for this. None of our OES ever did.
My Frenchie has had some problems with her anal glands in the past. She had an abcessed anal gland, it was really painful for her and very messy. After that the vet checked her and found that her glands were formed funny. Now she goes in every couple of months to have them emptied and we havn't had any problems since. I definately would not want to do it myself.
I was afraid I would have to express Monty's Anal glands after the time he got one infected and maggots in it
Fortunately he has not had a problem since.
We haven't had to express Busters. The thought makes me cringe.
Carley had to have hers done by the Vet once about a year ago. No problems before or since then with them.

Carley's Mom
There is actually a new ruling by the vetinary practise that groomers are now not allowed to do anal glads on somebodyelses dog, nor can they clean teeth unless its with a tooth brush and you cannot clean out an infected ear. These are all to carried out by a vet
When people used to go the vets a while back for glands, it was the nurse that did it, now the vet has to do it
This is quite a recent thing so do tell your teacher about it
As for doing anal glands, if it isnt broken you dont have to fix it! Dog empty their glands naturally and if you start messing with it they stop doing it then problems occure
It makes me so happy to hear I am not allowed to do glands!
My mums lab has issues with hers that make her smell really bad! It's hard when the friendliest and most enthusiastic dog on earth smells like that... Despite bathing efforts and living on the water getting daily swims. We all still love her but wow does she smell sometimes.

They also empty them when they are extremely scared, Ru had this terrible smell about him whenever he would get scared and then we would have to bath his back end. We had asked the vet and they had said thats what the smell was and that manually expressing them wouldnt fix it as he obviously had no issue with that. When we first got him this happened almost daily. It hasn't happened in the last 7 months... It was not a fun smell! Pretty sure there is a correlation between us getting another dog and his confidence, he doesn't freak out when strangers approach him/somebody makes a loud noise/my husband gets home. Thank you Mr. Sheepie Leonard for ridding Ru of the stinkiest scared smell ever!
It is a smell you cannot describe lol
Garfunkel emptied his on the Vet table, in the car, on the carpet, the smell in unmistakable.

I've only had Simon's done once, he was grabbing at his rear, and looking highly insulted at it at times.
thank thee oh lord that none of my dogs ever had anal gland problems, amen. 8)

Omg it's like Leonard knew we were talking about anal glands and wanted to show his stuff.

Dishwasher Heist... foiled by Physics

Last night My husband was loading the dishwasher (One of Leonard's favorite so spectator sports) and turned his back for a minute. Thinking this was his chance Leonard grabbed the wire rack that rolls out of the dish washer and tried to run away with it. Much to Leonards suprise the rack full of dishes fell out of the dishwasher (Which Leonard didn't know was possible) and all of the dishes CRASHED to the floor. Including a giant ceramic popcorn bowl which made a tremendous sound. I think this is the first time Leonard has actually been scared in his entire life. I don't think I have ever heard Brent laugh so hard as long as I have known him. It was a ridiculous situation that no other dog I know would have found themselves in. I supposed dishwasher theif can be added to his several other outlaw titles. We have an agreement that when we see Leonard prancing us by triumphantly that we automatically check to see what contraband he has stolen and replace his loot with something appropriate. He is really understanding about this.

Needless to say I have further proof that fear results in disgusting anal gland expression, which is much harder to deal with with a long coated Sheepdog than a short haired LabX. Nasty! Lucky Leonard isn't easily scared!

P.s. Leonard hasn't let this one bad experience tarnish his love of the dishwasher, but today he did not try to steal the dishwasher for himself instead returning to his gentle sniffing and Jedi stare downs.
Not common, but worth learning. My family's old sheepie needed it done, and my father has always been the Do It Yourself type. Sure enough, he did it himself in the bathtub whenever she needed it. No experience in grooming for that man--just the kind of thing he knew he had to do.
