An amazing dog

Tuesday my son and I went float fishing on a nearby Ozark stream. This was a 8 mile float that lasted about 10 hrs. Fishing was great with catch of 6 largemouth bass and 2 smallmouth. But the most amazing thing about the trip was a golden retriever that appeared on the scene at our put in point. As we preceeded on our trip, he follow us on the bank - up one steep bank, through willows, wading through shallow areas and where the bank was too steep and water too deep, he would continue behind us swimming. When we stopped for break or lunch he would sit near us on a gravel bar. When we moved faster with the trolling motor he would run to keep up.

He kept with us throughout the whole trip. He never showed any sign of heavy breathing are fatigue. He probably swam 1-2 miles of the journey. He let us pet him and did accept a bit of our lunch when offered. When we took out at the end of the day he disappeared into the woods. He did have rabies tags, but no ID.

What an amazing dog.

What an amazing dog, but how sad at the same time!! How could he be missing from his family for 10 hours and they didn't miss him? I hope he isn't homeless.
Chris
Poor guy, I hope he's not lost. Knowing humans will have food, I am sure he was grateful for the snack.
That is cool that he was so fit and healthy but I am very sad for his family if he had one, maybe he got dumped. 8O I wouldn't be surprised, I once saw a girl dump her full blooded Saint Bernard at a gas station.

We took care of him for a while, he had some social probs but he went to an older man on a ranch so it worked out, but it was one of the crulest things I have ever been witness too.

Good news about the dog: I call the lady that shuttles us to the put in and the dog is a yellow lab, who belongs to the family down the road; he apparently does this quite frequently. She took him home later that evening. Happy ending. I guess country dogs live a different life than we're used to. He certainly seemed to know what he was doing and was enjoying himself. I still think he should have had an ID on him.
They should get him a tag that says, "It's okay, I do this all the time!"
LOL Maxmm. Pretty cool dog! Glad you had a great fishing day. I love fishing...relaxing way to pass the time. :)
Sounds like a very cool dog! We should call him Old Yeller (without the sad ending, though!!!)
That is good news, and people should be tagging the dogs/cats...it sure saves alot of us other people worry for them.

True country dogs do have alot more freedom I suppose, my dog liked to go visit the neighbours dog every night and be home every morning (we never knew this)... we suspected as much when their dog had a litter of puppies and there was some suspicious looking black and white tuxedo style pups...hmmmm how'd that happen  anyways in the end he was run over by the bus driver on his way to pick me up from school, I was about 11 yrs. I had him since I was 4.
Maxmm, I like your idea about the tag!!!

Talk about a "dogs life" what fun just following boats on the river bank!!!
That's neat, what a dog. Bet he does that often .
It must have been nice to have company too.

Speaking of that, when does Barney go fishing with you?
Pictures, please!
When I was little, our dogs used to have free run up at the cottage all summer long. Our family pretty much owned the entire area, so it was only family members who had cottages along the river for miles. The roads into our cottaging area cut through a section of the Canadian Shield, all dirt roads, but a very silty sand that was no good for traction, so cars could go no more than about 10kph anyway. The family dogs crossed the river back and forth to various cottages all the time, not sure if they were visiting each other, or just keeping track of all the two leggeds. They did cross more at mealtimes though...lol... so maybe just making sure they didn't miss any scraps from ANY table. LOL
Willowsprite, that sounds delightful!!!!
It was.... I miss it so much. Our family still has cottages up there, but I haven't been up in years. My grandfather died in our cottage suddenly from an anuerysm. He woke up early that morning, my grandmother asked if he was ok, and he had replied "It's a beautiful day, I've never felt better and don't want to miss a minute of it" He stretched, and died.
That was 15 years ago this August, and I haven't been able to go back since. I was very close to him, it was very traumatic. I say every year that this is the year I will go back. I never do though. Maybe this year.
I totally understand what that feels like Willowsprite...I can't go back to my home town either. My grandfather died just 6 yrs ago now, and I am still not ready to go back. I miss him too much and he was more of a father to me, so I kinda lost my dad...we were very close.
