Would love to know how old all your OES' are in general if you feel a need to post "something" |

Baby Maxie Paws is 10 years, 4 months old. He was 4 when he was hurt... so young. It's hard to believe that his injury brought me here, and was the beginning of meeting some wonderful people. Below is the first post I ever made on the board... March 2, 2007. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Hello! Although I have been lurking on the board- this is my first post. We have an OES - Max- who is 4 years old. He is our baby, and he needs lots of good thoughts and prayers right now. 6 weeks ago Max was playing in the snow - and to make a very long story short- had a freak accident ( tripped) and ruptured 3 discs. He has had spinal surgery to relieve the pressure- and we are now in the recovery stage. For the first 4 weeks we had to keep him still - turn him evey four hours etc. He finally got his catheter out last week- and now we are walking him with a belly strap. He still has very little movement in his hind legs. We are considering physical therapy- but just not sure what to do. He is SUCH a sweet heart... we have poked and prodded and through it all - he has never even barked!! Just gives us lots and lots of kisses! Always such a gentleman. Have any of you had similiar experiences with your sheepies?? And if so- and advice for a quicker recovery?? We love him so and just want to do the best we can for him. Thanks so much! |
Mine aren't the oldest. Chewie is 6 (7 in April) and Bond's 16 months. I came on here when we lost our 1st OES Oliver d/t a traumatic injury in a snowmobile accident. That was in Dec 2005 and he was almost 8 yrs old. I know Michele just lost her Ziggi, and she was an old girl. Linda Z (oes) has her senior sisters.....13 or 14 maybe?? I'm curious too who we have for oldsters. |
My Oliver , Is somewhere between 10 &12, maybe. When I rescued him, the figured he between 3 and 6. I picked 4. My vet agreed with me. I say he is 10 1/2 and I use the date I picked him up at the shelted as his birthday, July 12. He owns my heart. Oliver even sent me pink and purple tulips for Valentines Day!!! What a Boy!!! |
i lost my daytona last year she was over 14yrs old |
I don't have golden oldies ...Izzie is going to be 8 and Taylor is going to be 2. |
Abby turned 14 this January Ive worried about her health since she turned 10...not because anything was actually WRONG...I just started worrying . This past year has been rough though. She had a malignant tumor removed from a mammary gland last July, has had many (MANY) reoccurring UTIs, and most recently (Christmas eve) has had a strange eye issue (I cant recall the name...it has to do with a nerve that go's down the neck...?) that causes her inner eyelid to cover most of her left eye. Shes still plugging along though . I'm surprised, and grateful for every day we have now. |
Roxy is 11 years, 8 months and change. Arthritis, and some congestive heart failure but still going reasonably strong except on stairs..... |
ravenmoonart, so glad to hear that about her!! She is such a sweet girl. I hope she has many more healthy days/months/years left So ...Abby seems to be the oldest right now. Enjoy hearing the ages of everyone's sheepdog. Lori, I clearly remember when you first came. That was such a hard time. Max sure has been one strong dog! Guess he knows how much you guys need him |
Laurel! As I was looking back to see when my first post was, I noticed YOU were the first person that responded to me Sorry to hear that Abbey is having issues. What a sweet gal she is. I think she is winning the race right now, at 14. |
Jo-- oh my gosh, wasn't that a horrible time! Max was such a sweetheart through all the surgeries and poking and prodding... I was a MESS!! Valerie's Chumley was recovering from the same kind of surgery, and she was a God send! Gave us so much good advice. Even spoke to Chumley's PT in Colorado. With the help of people here, and a great team of doctors and surgeons, he has come quite far. Dawn- I had no idea you lost a sheepie to such an accident. |
Hmmmm, thinking here. Kristine's Liz is pretty old now too. Maybe 12-13-ish? |
Bloo will be 2 in March |
Simone (MO) is 14 yrs 2 mo. One really old lady. |
Another old timer How is Simone doing? I felt like going down memory lane, so here's how I remember Abby. The pics are small lil j and Abby ...and then the whole crew visiting yuki, lil j, bert, and abby - and oh my gawd ...look at that couch. it was bought in 87!! |
Mo has taken the propensity to grow fatty tumors to new heights. I call her Miss Lump Lump. There is a rock hard tumor atop her head that has grown to where she only can see out of a slit in that eye. The other eye is fine. She's had arthritis in the driver's side fore leg since she was 6 and been on Rimadyl for 8 years About a year ago I noticed problems with her hips, now one leg in particular. So she falls over once in awhile, wears a harness all the time so we can lift up her rear if necessary (may 30% of the time), no more jumping, but daily she gets the zoomies (very, very slow motion and only for about 30 feet). The other day she tried to chase down a feral cat...."running" about 100 feet. Sometimes little surprises from the rear end. If she didn't have the zoomies and her amazing ability to tell time: our meals and hers, she probably would have been at the Rainbow Bridge now. But there's still life in the old lady but at first glance you may wonder why we keep her going. Her hair is falling out. I've been hesitant to brush thru the winter and now have mats to content with. She hates to have me fuss with her (always has) so I clip a bit here and there......she really is a mess. If she makes warmer weather she's going nekkid. Still very much Paul's dog. While he's been raking the thatch, she stays close watching. When he carts the stuff out back, she's there with him. They move about the same speed, If I'm here at computer, she's right behind me. She is fully aware of what's going on. |
Bailey is turning 12 in April. She could probably give Mo a run on the fatty tumors. With her liver values, Bailey isn't a candidate for haivng them removed. She struggles a bit on getting up, but once she is up, you would swear she is much younger. Riley is 8, almost 9 years old. Just a baby. |
got sheep wrote: Hmmmm, thinking here. Kristine's Liz is pretty old now too. Maybe 12-13-ish? Hsh! Don't tell her! And she's only 12. Kristine |

Awwww I love those pics with lil J so much!!!! She was such a young spunky girl then! Abuckie: I remember! Max's story has always touched me greatly. You guys and he are so strong and devoted to each other Sheepieboss: Sounds like Mo wins by a month! Your Mo sound SO much like Abby! Especially the slow-motion zoomies, and the uncanny time-telling! Abs is still queen of the household, and makes her opinion LOUDLY known to all . She still kicks Bert's butt all around the yard at least once a day. On the not-so-great side, Pooing just happens when it happens, and we are all fairly blase' about that these days I wash her bedding a couple of times a day, most days, and we've blanketed the house with non-skid rugs both for better traction and in case of accidents. Shes on Rimidyl and another, stronger pain med (for bad days only). |
Laurel, sounds about right. MO is not kicking anyone's butt these days. She was never pushy so no use starting. When we got the new kitchen 2 summers ago, throw rugs were mandatory too. She now only goes where there is a throw, no throw, she turns around. We modified steps for us, she's having trouble with those now. It kills her not to be able to jump.......she "rushes" up to the couch and remembers, "No, I can't do that anymore." Going down is a long slow and difficult to watch process. |
Mariah will be 13 years old in 28 days Happy because she's still in good health & acts much younger than her age but sad because I know she's not going to be around forever. Here she is 5 months ago at the OESCA National. |
She rocked at the national, Marilyn....absolutely gorgeous. Kristine |
Panda will be 13 on July 7th. He had a bad spell in the summer for a few days , but seems to have drank from the fountain of youth the last couple months. He has become far more active although I haven't changed his food nor meds. I have noticed however, he is constantly by my side and wants to snuggle with me more often while I'm on the couch. Or it could be that Merlin is finally allowing him to do so as he's getting older and more mellow. Merlin will be 9 in Aug. Shaggy, my previous OES was 15 when she passed. |
My OES is 12 days old |
Mad Dog wrote: She rocked at the national, Marilyn....absolutely gorgeous. Kristine Thanks Kristine. |
Clyde will be 9 this year but since he's double the size that he should be, I guess you could say he has the body of an 18 year old. |
If you add Tonks and Luna together, they're almost 11! |
OMG this is embaressing!!! However as the same time I feel like I've been given the gift of an extra year! I checked back on the first post when I first heard of Panda viewtopic.php?f=13&t=764 It's dated 2004 and he was 3 yrs old which meant he was born in 2001! That means he's going to be 12 not 13!!!! It also means Merlin is going to be 8 not 9!!! Yeah!!! Now I feel like a bad Mom for not remembering ..would even be worse if I forgot the DAY Merlin was born..Aug 26th that would be worse. You see my life partner, my brother and my son were all born that same day too. Ha! For the past gazillion years I've had numerous furkids and my mind now is muddled with dates. Good thing I have meticulous health and other records (which I should look at before posting ). >>>signed baaaaad Mom I should also mention Panda was formerly known as Robin and another disclaimer that his first owner was actually quite concerned and remains in touch to this day. She continued to pay 500 per month to that nasty kennel in order to keep him alive and was desperately trying to find a place for him to go to. At the time there existed no dog rescues over there and so adult dogs were regularly euthanized as they didn't think they could be rehomed. As a result of his story and visitors to my home from HK - who reported back that indeed a previously "aggressive dog" could be rehabilitated, the end result was the first ever dog rescue in Hong Kong was formed and now saves thousands of dogs. We all know that he's a big love but bit because he was being beaten at the time and it showed if a dog like Panda can be turned around then those others with no history could be too. But I'm rambling again but thought it was important to mention if you read that article. |
Not bad momma, Marianne, I'm always checking back. With MO I'm pretty sure as she was a mid-level pup when she came along. My problem is Harry. He was full grown so I'm always guessing about him--- 11-12 is as close as I can get. |
:O) Sheepie Boss I know especially if they are rescues and labeled as adults so you can only go by how long you've had them for plus a year or two extra or more if they are labeled as seniors. However, in Panda's case he arrived with his birth documents but they are buried in my file cabinet. I also had Blue and Merlin when he arrived and Shaggy had just passed 3 wks prior. Then Blue passed and Snoop came to my home and then later Gilligan. Not counting the over 300 cats I fostered and adopted some over the years, sigh then there were the bunnies and guinea pigs...my excuse for being befuddled as to remembering dates. Oh sheesh people that don't know me will think I'm a collector but seriously folks I'm not. I remember reading some time back that the difference between collectors and someone who has lots of animals is their vet bills. I have a file cabinet stocked full of each animals health records, microchips, Geri-panel checks, Advantage dates, ect...and have writeups of each animal, their personalities and health issues with their pictures on my walls. (Just in case someone needs to look after them). My brain can't hold all that much info. |

I "think" I told 6girls Yuki was 9 a few months ago... which she is 8 and when I realized my mistake [which I never said anything until now] ........I was soooooo embarrassed I didn't know my only furkiddos age. lol ChSheepdogs, Mariah looks gorgeous and I'm surprised she can still handle having long hair without making a big fuss? I start growing Yuki's hair out and brush DAILY so it's only 10 min TOPS ...but when I see it starts bothering her [just got cut down a month ago] ...i say it's grooming time. We need pics of Clyde. It's been forever it feels! |

I shaved Mariah down around Thanksgiving time. She's growing into a cute puppy cute now. One of my frineds stopped to see the puppies several weeks ago & asked "who's the other older puppy over there?" They were serious! I retired her after those shows. She had carried that coat for over 3 years at that time. Mariah's a "different" cookie. She does what ever you want her to do. Always has. If it's 6 hours of grooming , she accepts it. If it's time to be shaved, fine with her. She never seems to mind the long coat or the grooming time. But now that she is retired she'll be kept short. |
My Violet is 10 yrs 3 mts and 1 day old. lol She was born November 17th 2002. She is not the oldest on here and it makes me feel really good that there are so many older then Violet. Each morning when I call her for breakfast, I kinda hold my breath until I hear her tip tapping across the tile floor. When she doesn't respond right away, my heart stops and I try not to panic as I go looking for her. You see Violet will not miss a meal for anything...she is my "feeding" alarm clock. Some times I feel like I'm on a death watch and as horrible as that sounds, after Pearl passed, I do worry. Violet has turned out to be the best dog ever. She still has that clown personality. She was just under my desk as I was typing, doing her exercises where she rolls on her back and keeps kicking her legs up in the air, her feet got me a few times. Such a silly. Violet is till in good health, she's lost her sight but does great on her own...we've all adjusted to being run into and keeping our voices going so she can find her way. Her hd doesn't seem to bother her at all, we are so lucky. She sometimes has accidents when she can't find the doggy door to get outside, but we just take care of it and count our blessings. Our floors are all tile so the best floors to have dogs on anyway. We're all growing old together. She is quite a daddy's girls still and when daddy gets home from working the night shift, I can always find Violet sleeping under the curtain on her daddy's side of the bed. My day is usually filled with the sound of sweet songs of sleeping After readng abuckie's first post on Max, i decided to look up my early postings back in 2006...boy has time fllown by. Violet was only 3 in my earliest post and China was 2. It brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks for the posting idea Mrs. J. |
Marianne and Jo; if its any consolation, I keep forgetting my OWN age these days . Ive been convinced I was 49 for the past year, when , in fact I don't turn that age till this May! |
ravenmoonart wrote: Marianne and Jo; if its any consolation, I keep forgetting my OWN age these days . I'm glad Yuki is in good health but when her legs go out ...like they do today and she yelps and yelps in pain ... both Mr. J and I go into puppy love mode and can't leave the girl alone. ...and yes, that's a lifesaver to have tile. Not sure what we'll do if we ever have that problem since we have some carpet in the living room at the new place. |
Raven, egads !!!You told people you were older than you actually were!!!! Oh that goes against my nature as while I boasted in my youth I would never be one of "those ladies" that never told their age, I swore I wouldn't be one of them. I'm not only one of them, but I never correct the teens I work with when they play guessing game as to how old I am. They usually guess in the 35-38 age range - which is probably old to them but I am thrilled and it makes my day. I also never correct them either! Helen your post touched me as I can certainly relate to the age old affirmities our furkids seem to develope as they age. It's why I dread birthdays now for my boys as I know that day is coming where we'll have to say goodbye so each day is a blessing with my Panda boy. Violet is so lucky to have you as her mom. :O) Mrs J I also have tile and laminate in my home (no accidents yet) but I find that in order for him to get up on the couch his legs slide too much on the laminate so I put a rubber mat down for him to get some traction. Carpet helps with the old ones when they lose a lot of their mobility but at the same time it's not so good when they start having accidents. You give Yuki a kiss on the nose for me! |
When we redid the kitchen plus we removed the tile and wood and put in high grade vinyl. We weren't thinking dogs or current fashion, we had it with thresholds, grout lines, etc especially as we age and may need walkers. We forgot about the dogs. The ceramic tile grout lines were great toenail grabbers, keeping the dogs from slipping. What is easy for a walker became impossible for old dogs. So down went throw rugs while we have dogs. |
I remember when I first saw my current home how thrilled I was that it was a mere step out into the yard. Whereas my previous home had steep steps going out to the back yard as the living area was upstairs. This made it so difficult for my old dogs and I carried Blue down the stairs for the last 6 months of his life. I did the same for Shaggy. He could climb up them but not down and she had troubles in the last 2 wks of her life. I feared if that happened to Panda as I knew I wouldn't be able to lift him and thus his life might be cut shorter if his hips got worse. (Panda has moderate dysplasia) It bugged me enough that I was already thinking that my next house would have easy access to outdoors before Panda got older. So when I saw this house I remember thinking this is perfect for old dogs! It also had carpet in the living room and I finally removed it shortly after Gilligan passed. (Gilligan had severe dysplasia) His hips were bad and he needed the traction to lift himself up. Like Sheepie Boss who is a awesome mom, I also placed several throw rugs and mats down for Panda on top of my laminate but somehow my old guy still has no troubles lifting himself on the couch if I placed a mat next to it. |
I don't feel so bad now. I had to look up Bailey's birthdate before I posted. We have kept the carpeted floors for the dogs, with runners in the tile and laminate areas. |
I feel bad trying to schedule a drs appt for my UPRIGHT children. Once that "what's their birthdate" question comes up...... it's a long pause and confusion before I can reply. Way too many dates for this old brain. |
Hmm now I'm second guessing myself as to how old Merlin is ...is he going on 8 or 9? After reading your post Ms J and seeing that Yuki is 8, I think Merlin is older than her as you joined in 2004 and I remember her puppy pics...that is if I am remembering correctly. I joined in 2003 and got Merlin a few months later or was it a year later? (slaps head to stir up brain cells) Oh gasp...now I'm not sure how old my boy is. I think he was six-8 months old when Panda in arrived in 2004, so that would make him going on 9 afterall... Ms J with so many little uprights at home and a housefull of pets...I don't know how you remember dates either! You are one busy lady! |

Is this true? Really? Marianne, Robin/Panda and you inspired the first dog rescue in Hong Kong? Have you been able to confirm that? Is there a link to the rescue? That is awesome, and would be so cool if we could verify that! |
Hi Ron, My avatar on my FB page, which has always been one of my favorite photos. It was taken by a fellow who contacted me from Hong Kong and visited my home in Canada. The photo was significant as it showed what huge strides Panda had made after he arrived. It was the first time he had climbed on my lap and the fellow snapped the photo. This gentleman said he was here to visit Panda and report back to a caucasion woman who was trying to start a dog rescue in HK. he said he was her interpretor in HK as he was trying to co-ordinate things.I remember giving him a book on dog rescue. He was impressed that Panda had made such huge strides and was very optomistic as to what he would report back as he said many people didn't understand that even grown dogs could be happy with a new family. Especially one like Panda who had that history behind him. I sadly don't remember his name and don't even remember how he even found me. I think his initial contact was via phone. Shortly after that, Panda's orginal owners, parents, aunts, uncle visited Panda on their trip to Canada. His original owner, I believe, became involved in HK dog rescue too or supported it as she often sent Panda gifts from fundraisers she attended for HK dog rescue. (This was before I joined FB so I'm not sure what her involvement is). I wouldn't be so bold to claim to have been the inspiration but perhaps Panda or his former owner had some hand in it...honestly I'm not sure what happened after that initial meeting with the fellow from HK. However, when I saw years later that there did exisit an HK dog rescue that the founder made her dreams a reality. I was thrilled! It was through Panda's original owners FB page that I saw that indeed there now exist HK dog rescue .I added it to my FB page. Panda's original owner is Lena Tsang. Lena has always remained in contact from the time Panda/Robin has been with me and I have no doubt she did everything she could when she was unable to find a place where she could keep him. Following your question I checked the background and it appears the foundation was set up in 2002, registered in Aug 2003 and received full charity status in 2005. Panda arrived at my home 2004 so it appears that the founder had already made some steps to getting HKDR off the ground. Feel free to contact her Ron. Or would you like me to? My curiousity is peeked! https://www.facebook.com/hkdogrescue http://www.youtube.com/user/HongKongDogRescue |

Well, Annie was FOURTEEN when she passed in July 2011... Foz just turned 7 and he BETTER live to be 14! He is just the best! I think I joined the board just as Annie came into our lives when she was 5 1/2 years old. I still can't believe she was with us for so long. She was always healthy (although not exactly mentally stable) really up until the last year of her life. She only had a handful of ear infections and only had arthritis in her knee that was diagnosed. She was was a healthy broad and certainly special and many of you know. Thanks to EVERYONE on the forum and Ron for his exceptional job of maintaining it. I have met and spoken with so many amazing people that I would have never come in contact with. It is this forum that truly opened my eyes to what it means to be kind and compassionate. Met so many wonderful people and come to know things that I never would have otherwise. LOVE YOU!!! |
Hello all, I think my Mum may have the oldest she has Bramble who is 16years old? Liz xxx |
Amazing! I knew of an NZ OES to made it to 17.....years ago. |
Carley is 6. She will be 7 in February. I hope I have her around for a very long time. She is behind my chair as I type. I do wish she would not pass gas that is so smelly it could run everyone out of the house. But then she gives you that tilted head look and you fall in love with her all over again. |
