The Firestarter

One evening we left a dirty dish on top of our gas stove. When we woke up the next morning, the entire house was filled with gas! GUS had jumped up to get the dish, and with his enormous paws, was able to push down and turn one of the knobs to the on position. Luckily everyone was okay. We quickly opened all doors and windows, despite the freezing temperatures, and reintroduced Gus to his Kennel.

Oh my! I'm glad it all worked out ok, except for Gus (though he did probably get a bunch of good licks in).

Jake has an affinity for bread. Loves bread. Can't get enough bread. On more than 1 occasion back when he was young enough to get to the coutertops, he has stolen a loaf of bread that we did not secure.

When Jake eats any stolen goodies, he ALWAYS takes them to a particular spot to eat them. One day, we came home and no dog running to greet us -- (we always know that he has done something bad by this behaviour, so CLEARLY he understands and remembers that he has done wrong). Anyway, we see in his spot the remains of a plastic bag of bread -a nice cinnamon raisin bread that hadn't been opened yet- with two slices in it.... both the end pieces!!!
It must be in the breed. Gus is a breadoholic, too. In fact, I think a left out loaf of bread is what lead to his love for the counter. Last weekend I left 6 muffins and 1/2 batch of cookies on the counter and within seconds, he'd eaten them all. A good tip when they over eat or get into something that can hurt them like chocolate is to give them about 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide. It makes dogs vomit within seconds. Our vet told us about this when he ate a bag of uncooked rice and it worked like a charm.
Our Sebastian has just started to raid our pantry shelves for anything and everything he can get his paws on. Last week he tried to break open a can of peas, some chocolate syrup and a jar of barbeque sauce. The week prior to that we came home to find an entire case of beer bottles strewn over the floor. Sebastian had torn open the beer case, bent the bottle caps back with his teeth and licked the dripping beer out of each one until they were just about empty! And, to our surprise, he wasn't the least bit tipsy!
