Miss Ellie, two years later

Continuation of Miss Ellie and the !$*# mites. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=34475&hilit=Miss+Ellie&start=15
It all started about two years ago when Ellie developed what appeared to be a rash in the flap of her ear. It came back as over active demodex mites. Blood panel run and thyroid was off so we began seloxin. We were told Ellies mites got out of hand because Her immune systems was out of wack.

No matter what we did the mites just ravaged Miss Ellie. Last June the dermatologist told us to discontinue the seloxin. He said its not unusual to get a false thyroid reading when mites are already out of control and the seloxin may be causing he thyroid to be off kilter. Ellie already had active mites when her test was run and we were ready to try anything.

Ellie struggled for months with continuous low dosages of Ivermectin. Her feet would inflame to twice their size and small patches of skin would scab, bleed, and become infected. During her last episode where she had to be carried for bed to grass for potty and then carried back, I decided to change from the weekly medicated shampoo and try something natural. I wanted anything that would control the mites enough that her immune system could kick in.

I had ordered neem oil for my sons psoriasis. It helped control it to a level where he didn't look like his skin was falling off. So I ordered a pet Neem shampoo (Theraneem) and added an additional ounce of cold pressed Neem oil.

Long story short, Miss Ellie's last check up showed over active mites but No eggs and No larva! :excited: Now we continue the low dose Ivermectin and weekly baths until April 15 , our next check up.

Lesson learned; don't trust a thyroid measurement if your dog is ill. Check again just to make sure.

Good news! Neem does have anti growth properties, so let's hope the adults die off and no more instar development, no more babies becoming adults. Surprised Neem hasn't smothered the adults, goes to show how deeply they penetrate the skin.
Fingers crossed that this is the end of those darn mites. :crossed:
poor Miss Ellie! Hope this is the answer for you to get rid of the mites!
