We got a new dog, not an OES.

After losing Pepsi, despite the fact that she used to attack him when ever she would get ornery, Rags loved him very much.
This was most evident after we lost him, as she wouldn't get off the couch. She refused to play. I even saw her crying one night, which is something I have never seen and never expected from the Evil Girl. I literally saw tears in her eyes and one running down her face. It broke my heart.
After a couple of weeks I was starting to think we were going to lose her too. She ate, would go outside briefly and would spend the day and night sulking and not interacting with anyone, but she did go after Lacey once and attacked her for no reason.
I couldn't bear to lose her too, no matter how much of a bitch she is, we do love her.
I went down to the local Shelter (as I am not ready to get another Sheepie Boy right now, actually not ready for a dog at all, he is Rags' dog, as she is the reason we got him.) and found a dog that bonded with me immediately.
The woman at the Shelter said, "You don't want him, he's hyper, why don't you look at other dogs."
I was thinking, he already picked me. Every time I walked away from his pen he would whimper and cry until I came back.
His story was he was caught in a trap, like this one http://cmsimg.gdn.mydesert.com/apps/pbcsi.dll/bilde?NewTbl=1&Site=J1&Date=20130124&Category=NEWS01&ArtNo=301240810&Ref=PH&Item=13&Maxw=620&Maxh=465&q=60
Actually, this photo was taken most likely where he came from Duroville in Thermal.
I found this article from two years ago http://www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2013301230030and DH said immediately, OMG, those two could totally be his parents!
Since one is an Australian Cattle Dog and the other a Red Dog and the fact he was born approx 2 years ago, it may be!! LOL
Our county has begun a mass rescue of these dogs, which me be upwards of 800 dogs!!
There is a story here: http://www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2013301230030
Elvis was found near Duroville, on a farm. He was covered from head to toe with ticks, had a REALLY large Tapeworm and quite a few scars on his body which is consistent with the other dogs recovered from Duroville.
When I came home and told Billy about the dog, this was after I brought Rags down there to get her opinion, which she went nuts over him, wagging her nubby at a hundred miles an hour. He has asked what his background was. I told him he we was caught in a trap on a farm. As soon as I said, "Caught in a Trap", he started singing Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds, "Caught in a Trap, I can't walk out!" We looked at each other and decided that would be his name.
His name is Haden's Suspicious Minds - Caught in a Trap - Elvis
From probably never having a home and living on the streets his entire life, he has adjusted very well to being a house dog. He has never had one single accident in the house. He is very mouthy, like a puppy, but gentle. I think it's just lack of manners. We are working on that. He is also scared of other dogs barking at him when we take walks and wants to cross the street to get away from them. He does get along great with Lacey and Rags though.
He has already learned to "Come", for the most part. "Sit" and "Drop it".
he has become a spoiled guy in just the couple short months he's been here.

Here are a few pics of him. More can be seen on his Dogster Page, listed below

He's got a lot of scars. :(

I think he's happy here!

He is sweet as can be and has bonded with everyone in the house.
We are happy to have him here! Especially because he has kept us smiling with his goofy antics.

What a sweet face!! Congratulations! Elvis is one lucky dog.
Thanks guys!
He is really the perfect fit. We had planned on getting a Golden Retriever from rescue when one of our dogs had passed. We were not expecting that to happen for quite a few years yet. And with Rags in the depression she was in, we needed to do something ASAP! But Elvis is Red and possible Lab. So he will be our Golden. LOL Our next dog, after Rags passes, will be a male Sheepie.
Of course, I am not used to a shedding dog since we haven't had a shedding dog in 7 years. Though he's not too bad.... at least this time of year. Also one less dog I have to shave down. Rags always fights me every step of the way with grooming.... Lacey too! Pepsi was never a fan of it, but always was happy with the end results.
Elvis lets us do just about anything to him (except a bath). He got a bath two weeks after we got him. We had to wait because he came home right after being Neutered. So we lived with a very stinky dog for those two weeks.
When I got him in the bath, he seemed a bit nervous. When I put the water from the handheld shower head (which was at a very light setting) he flipped. Literally!!! He climbed up the wall and slipped out of the tub.
I struggled to get him back in. He was like a wet worm. He did great for the shampooing, but when I went to rinse him off he freaked out again and climbed backwards up the tub wall and out again. After 5 tries of getting him back in and him jumping out, I had most of the water off and gave up. LOL!
I was told next time to use a pitcher as he may prefer that.
He sits completely still while I trim his nails. Which none of mine ever have!!

With what he had gone through, being attacked by wild animals and other dogs and really God knows what else. He has an amazing temperament.

He has become an awesome watchdog. Only barks when someone enters the house that he doesn't know.
He's got a big scary bark too!
Or if he hears a noise that sounds a bit too close for comfort.
Other than that he is a talker. He whines and sings.

And more than anything in the world, he just eats up the love you give him.
When I ask if he wants a kiss, he will come up and put his nose against my lips.
Of course he answers me with his talking to almost every question.
And when I say, "I Love You!" He tries to say it back.

I am glad I didn't listen to the woman at the Shelter who said she felt he was too hyper.
She tried to get us to adopt a Shepherd Mix who wanted nothing to do with us. All he did was walk around the room and went to the bathroom all over it. He wouldn't even come to Hayley and I. I told her, "Please put him back!"
She wanted us to take him because he was already neutered and could go home that day.
He was obviously a marker since he was neutered and peeing everywhere.

I asked the woman if she could please bring out the "hyper" Cattle Dog Mix.
He was so sweet! Ran right to Hayley and I for attention and love. He also had to go to the bathroom, but was very upset about having to go inside and cried for 5 minutes straight before I told him. This is the shelter, every dog who has been in this room before you has peed, go ahead. He peed for like 2 minutes straight. He is obviously not a fan of going to the bathroom inside. He has never gone in our house. Which is a little weird since every dog that had come before him has had at least one accident the day they arrived. But not one from him.
When the woman came back she asked if he was too hyper. My answer was not at all. He would probably fit in great since we had another Herding dog at home. And he has fit in perfectly. He had me wrapped around his paw from the first minute I saw him and looked into his eyes. He had Pepsi's Eyes and I think that is why I was attracted to him.
When I reached my hand in to pet him, he looked up at me like, "You are the one!" and leaned all his weight against me and the kennel door. I tried not to look at him, I didn't want to get sucked in. I wanted to look around and see what other dogs they had.
Ultimately, we adopted that "hyper" dog. He is not really hyper. He is a very mellow dog.
He does enjoy running with Rags. Though he does not play fetch. He nips at Rags' heals when she tries to play fetch. I think he thinks she's a Sheep. LOL!
What a heart healer for Rags and you too :hearts: :hearts:

Thank you for his rescue :high5:
What a beautiful story!
Great story and nice looking dog and a good home as well, which is the most important
Thanks! He is a sweetie, very silly and reminds me of Santa's Little Helper (from the Simpsons) with his goofball ways and looks too!
Though he did lunge at my MIL tonight and growled and barked his scary bark.
BUT, I bet my life my husband left the door unlocked and she just walked right in. I know what he does! I was not home at the time. I will ask tomorrow though.
He was being a good boy and protecting his family! But she got scared and thought he would try and eat her and asked that we put him outside while she watched the kids and we went out to dinner. He was not left outside! We put him outside with access to the dog door which leads to our bedroom. So he probably slept the entire time on our bed. When I got home, he was in the bedroom, curled up on the bed.
Unlike Rags and Lacey, Elvis is content to just go with the flow. Rags and Lacey would have scratched our door the entire time and barked. Elvis is so mellow! I hope his mellowness will teach the girls to be mellow too. Though I doubt it, girls will be girls! LOL!
I would like to socialize him more by having people over, so he can get used to people coming over and see that it's OKAY for others to come in, if we allow them too.
Funny thing, my MIL never liked Lacey. And in the 6 years we have had her she never recognizes her when we give her a haircut. She always asks if we got a new dog. LOL! Tonight, when we got home she said that Lacey was so sweet! I don't think she has ever bet her, just pushed her away.
She also asked how old Rags was now because she thinks she has mellowed a bit..... but then proceeded to say, "Wow, that's pretty old, I guess she won't be around much longer!" 8O I informed her that most live to around 12 years old, some even older, including our friend's OES who passed away at age 17!!
Rags will be 9 at the end of the month.
She is NOT a dog person, but just got a new dog when she retired last month and seems to really adore her. Who knows, maybe she is changing for the better! I don't trust anyone that doesn't have a dog! LOL

My mother was terrified of dogs (especially German shepherds, when I was growing up there was an older lady nearby who had 4 big GS, they would run around, I bet they were really sweet but my mom was terrified). When I was in my early 20's, my parents ended up unexpectedly with a rescued stray through an ex-gf of mine (long story  ) My parents loved this dog, Rosie (so did I!) and she is the reason I have 3 sheepdogs now (she was a mix of unknown origin, I thought she looked closest to a sheepdog, but now that I know more breeds, she was probably mostly Polish Lowland Sheepdog). Anyway, my mom is a huge dog person now, Rosie passed away a few years ago, and they have a new rescue now, another rescue mix, but funny enough, she looks exactly like a miniaturized German Shepherd! My mom adores my girls, and with my sisters's dogs, she's used to a lot of canine traffic in her home. So long story short, my mom went from being terrified of dogs to being a huge dog person in her late 40's!
