Dry Puppy Food Recommendations UK

Hi, Bo is now 14 weeks old on Royal Canin Junior Maxi, feeding approx 3 cups per day.

Can anyone recommed any other good dry food available in UK which maybe slightly cheaper than Royal Canin ie mid range but not cheap rubbish ? Have got completely confused with all the different foods on the market ?

Thanks, Susan

Hi,
Bloo is on Applaws dry food. He has been on it for a few months now. It is the only dry food he will eat. (Ive tried allof the biscuits and he wont touch any but Applaws)
Its normally £12 for small bag or (i think) around £40 for the large bag, however its on offer at the moment in the pet shop at half price so we are stocking up.
They do puppy, adult small breed, adult large breed, lite and senior. Its good food, doesnt smell bad, and Bloo loves it anyway :) Besides Applaws, the only other he eats is frolic, but frolic isnt really biscuits, its like a moist food not really good for a growing puppy though.

Beta is good stuff and James Wellbeloved. Eukanuba sent Bloos poop black so i took him off that at about 1 year old.

Good Luck finding a dry food :)

Hi we have changed our 2 dogs back on to Green Dog which suits Summers tum. Its just under £40 for a bag that lasts them both 6 weeks. James Wellbeloved and Arden Grange and Barking Heads are good as well. If you google the firms and then send them an email saying you are looking for a good dog food you will get bombarded with either free samples or coupons!
Hi

Cloud is on Royal Canin he is 18 months old and has always been on it and he does like it. I'm sure there are other good makes and the people here will advise. I'm sure you know but if you change the food you have to do it slowly and carefully. Our OES babies have very sensitive tummies and you will want to avoid runny bottoms etc.

Good luck with your search maybe ask your breeder for suggestions?

Cheers Debs
You could look at James Wellbeloved range of foods,

Archie started on Purina ProPlan this is what he was on with the Breeders but I found it made him quite loose
Thanks for replies, yea think ive read about all these and more !

According to Royal Canin Bo should be having around 3 and 3/4cups a day Im giving him 3 and he wolfs it down like ive not fed him in a month ! Scared to over feed just not sure if its filling him up and also read that Royal Canin is full of bad things and over priced and also that its one of the best ? Oh if only Bo could talk lol

Thankyou, Susan

I have tryed the chepest to one of the dearest ,I have tryed making our own ,
one of our top showers/breeder feeds her dogs on R/Canin,
I was advise to put my dogs on it and have found it very good there coats
as you can see in my profile photo of my 3 ,if coats are good the rest should be too

Has Bo-boy been wormed ?
you could try mixing R/caninn with a cheeper dog food so they have the best of both foods ?
or have you any friends who are regester as breeders who would get a discount and may let you order the food ?

if you over feed there poo will be runny/lose stools ,
Hi Susan, firstly never feed the recommended amount as per the bag of dry food. You need to work out as each dog is different what's correct for your youngster. Most important is as he is in the rapid growth stage not to have him roly poly as he is developing. :D

Now royal canin as far as my opinion is concerned is crap, yes fed that, had a pupper & her brother come from overseas and the breeder was feeding that and could not wait for her and along with the owners of her brother to get off the stuff. The smell of the poooo's, the consistency was black and greasy and the amount she was doing was awfull. Her brother was the same, so switched over to a holisitic brand. Was not overfeeding her and yes extremely expensive and when you read the ingredients in it not worth the price and also does not rate well with what's in it.

I dont know whats available in the UK but I am sure there is better kibble to feed.

Just remember too when you do find something you like to feed them, transition over, over a few weeks, the old with the new to not upset there tummies.

The usual transition is 1 week of 1/4 new to 3/4 old
No problems then half and half for 3 to 4 days
then increasing to 3/4 new kibble to 1/4 old then eventually onto soley the new dry. Any problems then stay on the transition of each amount a little longer till there systems adjust.

Best wishes with finding what right for you and your pupper. :wag:
When I collected my two from the breeder they were being fed Eukanuba Lamb and rice puppy and we kept to that and changed them on to the adult version when the time was right. The kennels that we use when we go away were using James Wellbeloved so we eventually changed them onto that to make life easier (Still the lamb and rice version) as the ingredients were very similar but it was cheaper than the Eukanuba. They get on well with this and Sweetpea in particular has a VERY delicate stomach to say the least but no problems with this brand. We buy in bulk and its delivered free from GJW Titmuss and last week, even with all the snow we've had, they delivered within 2 days of ordering! Very good service and they always have special offers on if you buy 2 or more bags at a time. As Lisa said though, change over very slowly when you do!
I think it is just trial and error. Summer had awful poos on jameswellbeloved. The one they are both on now is fine. The yorkie can eat anything! Summer would eat anything! But then we would all suffer! :wag:

You will find across the land that one dog food suits this dog but not the next door neighbor's dog for example and vice verse.

We have fed our dogs on various dog foods throughout the years, changing due to that dog food not being produced anymore (febo), to the ingredients changing (JWB) to a natural food (Chudleys) to Pro-Plan (didnt suit Tia or Lincoln). So the best advice I can give you is to look at the dog food and do any changes in stages. One food I will advise you against would be Bakers, as it is full of salt and Bo will be bouncing off the walls. Whatever food you decide on ensure the protein is under 20% as I imagine he will be on Junior soon? Also if he looks hungry increase the amount you give him, but be careful as OES are prone to tummy twists - I know you cant win either way!

Just a suggestion, have you wormed him?

When Tia was in whelp - Mom and I went to Pets at Home and our local dog food place to compare the analysis of all the dog foods (and believe me we went through everyone one taking notes) and then studied them when we got home. We decided to put Tia and Lincoln on Royal Canin, then when the puppies arrived they were on Royal Canin. Our gang are still on RC and I have no complaints and in fact my moggy is also on RC - she loves it!

I have had wonderful results with this food and in fact our friends who bred staffies, feeds her bunch on RC and she just used to buy the complete food that was on offer at the pet store that week as they have cast iron tummies she could do that. She has noticed the difference with them and still continues to pay for RC.

However, if Bo is happy on RC then I wouldn't change him. If its about cost, then as a suggestion why not buy a cheaper bag of food - wagg (check the ingredients) or something else and mix this with the RC then it stretches out the RC a little bit.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.
