walk length/ amount of exercise

Taking into account the fact that each dog is an individual, I'm wondering what is a good starting guideline for the amount of exercise I should be giving an adult OES. We plan to adopt an OES in the near future and I wonder what I should plan for. I just finished sitting for a 4 year old male OES for 5 weeks (he completely stole my heart!) and I'd say the average walk I gave him was 1-1.25 miles. Sometimes more than that, but never less than about .8 miles on days when I had less time. I'd also try to make sure he got some vigorous play in the backyard each day. Behaviorally, that seemed to be enough for him, but I'm wondering if it's enough health-wise.

So I'd love to hear how you all provide for your pup's exercise, how long your daily walk usually is and how that seems to work out for your particular dog. Just trying to do my research! :)

Thanks,

Merrilee

I don't think one mile would tire lily out. We play daily fetch instead of walks because there's no way I can run for the hours it would take to tire her out.
I would start with a 10/15 min walk 1st that will give you time to see how new sheepie is like on walking :is sheepie used to lead walking ;meeting other dogs/strange things !

Will you need training classes ?

. one thing i would advise is NOT to let sheepie off the lead till you know,

once you have your answers you can increase length of walk.

good luck and let us know and some photos :high5:

Thanks Val - we have only just started our search for our future Sheepdog, so I do not know yet if we will need training classes, We are open to all options (puppy from breeder, adult rescue dog, etc.) as long as the dog is the right fit for us. So I'm not sure if we'll end up with a well trained re-homed dog or a puppy or rescue that needs training or re-training.

Oh, and for daily walks the dog would DEFINITELY be on lead. We live in a quiet suburban neighborhood, but near our city center so there is lots of activity on my preferred walk route and lots of other dogs (many of them small dogs who are not well controlled) being taken for their walks as well.

You can bet there will be pics when we find our pup though! The photo in my profile is the sheepie we sere sitting for. SUCH a good boy!

And Annastacia - 1 mile definitely didn't tire him out but seemed to fulfill his requirement for the discipline of the daily walk. Then we played fetch or I simply watched him run around the yard at full bore with a squeaky toy in his mouth. Great fun for both of us!
I love your profile photo he looks a real sweetie :hearts: :hearts: :hearts:
