I am assuming you did a thorough check of the paw to make sure there were no thorns or something stuck in it? Maybe she just hurt it if she was running or acting like a crazy puppy? My first thought would be possible Lyme's disease....but, I live where ticks are very abundant and Lyme's is prevalent. If I had a limping dog who was a bit lethargic and I ruled out that nothing was stuck and I didn't see something that would have caused an injury, I would have a bloodtest done to test for Lyme's.... I don't personally think "growing pains" is a good answer from a vet. |

I've never heard of this before. She's not crying when she walks, just doesn't have much energy. Yes, growing pains is an actual condition - just casual slang for a condition known as Panosteitis, or pano for short. Here is a link that explains it more fully: http://leerburg.com/pano.htm |

However, depending on where you live, you should always consider it. I had a sheepie with Lyme's.... I had Lyme's.... my brother had Lyme's.... I know other people and other dogs who had Lyme's.... so, it seriously is the 1st thing I think of when it comes to low energy and "pain" |

I found out about it years ago because of working with our basset rescue. Bassets aren't large dogs, per se, but they are large boned with dwarf genes. We got several young dogs in who had it. By taking weight off them (the ration needs to be drastically cut - to slow growth and reduce weight load on the dog) and reducing activity, they do outgrow it. I grew up with Brittanies - they are smaller, lighter boned dogs, so it never was something we saw. |
It happens in OES - more typical in males but can happen in bitches too. Belle's son had a bout of it as a pup - he was a bit older though. Vet warned breeder that it could and probably would come and go, and could shift from leg to leg (so mirrors lyme in some ways) but it didn't in his case. Hopefully that's all it is and she'll grow out of it. Kristine |
Thanks so much for the responses. I guess it was just growing pains because she is back to her crazy puppy self! We do have Lyme disease around here - I didn't even think of that! |
